    • A heat generator has a heating chamber and a pair of heat exchange chambers located adjacent to the heating chamber. The heating chamber includes inner walls and accommodates viscous fluid. A rotor is located in the heating chamber and has shearing surfaces facing the inner walls of the heating chamber. The rotor is rotated for shearing the viscous fluid that occupies the clearance between the inner walls of the heating chamber and the working surfaces thereby generating heat. Each inner wall includes a center region, which is located in the vicinity of the axis of the rotor, and a peripheral region, which surrounds the center region. Heat generated in the heating chamber is transferred to the heat exchange chambers and heats circulating fluid in the heat exchange chambers. Each inner wall includes grooves extending radially from the peripheral region to the center region. Each groove includes a bottom and a pair of side walls. The cross-section of each groove is U-shaped, without sharp corners, to prevent flow disturbances in the groove and to prevent wear of the mold that forms the grooves.

The fluid from the heating chamber is stored in the reservoir. The heater further includes a return passage connecting the reservoir and the heating chamber. The fluid returns from the heating chamber to the reservoir through the return passage. The return passage has an entrance opening in an inner wall of the heating chamber. The entrance opening faces the peripheral edge of the rotor, and the maximum width of the entrance opening is greater than the thickness of the rotor.

    • In the heater of the present invention, a heating chamber accommodates a viscous fluid. A rotor is located in the heating chamber. The rotor rotates and shears the viscous fluid to generate heat. The heat generated in the heating chamber is transferred to the heat exchanger and heats a fluid that flows through the heat exchanger. A reservoir stores the viscous fluid. The reservoir has an upper portion and a lower portion, and the lower portion has a greater volume than the upper position. A return passage connects the heating chamber to the reservoir so that the viscous fluid moves from the heating chamber to the reservoir when the rotor rotates. A supply passage connects the reservoir to the heating chamber so that the viscous fluid flows from the reservoir to the heating chamber.

    • This invention provides a viscous heater which can attain an improvement in heat generating efficiency while preventing leakage caused by expansion of a viscous fluid. For this purpose, a disk-shaped rotor is employed, and a front housing body, a front plate, a rear plate, and a rear housing body constitute housings, and these are stacked and fastened together by through bolts. Surplus spaces in the shape of concaves are formed in the front plate between the respective through bolts and water passages so as to communicate with the heat generating chamber in their outer circumference.
