    • PURPOSE:To improve the durability of electrode and to carry out the liquid surface control of molten glass at high accuracy by lowering a the electrode into a crucible holding molten glass and electrically detecting the liquid surface when the electrode is brought in contact with the liquid surface of the molten glass. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 10a is lowered downwardly into a crucible 1 holding molten glass 2 while voltage is supplied from an electric power source 14. When the top end of the electrode 10a is brought into contact with the liquid surface of the molten glass 2, current is caused to flow from the electric power source 14 through the electrode 10a, molten glass 2 and the crucible which is detected by an electric current detecting part 15 and is inputted to a liquid surface control part 17 as a signal. When the top end position of the electrode 10a inputted to the liquid surface control part 17 is lower than the reference value, the instruction to increase the supply speed of clad glass is outputted to a supply control part 19a, and when it is higher than the reference value, the instruction to decrease the supply speed of glass is outputted to the part 19. On the other hand, the detected signal of the detecting part 15 is also inputted to a vertical movement control part 16, and the electrode 10a is raised to the direction to be far from the liquid surface of the molten glass 2 by an elevating unit 11a.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain an image guide excellent in flexibility by welding only both ends of bundle of an optical fiber, providing the clearances to the intermediate parts of each optical fiber and thereafter spinning it in the low-temp. zone in softening point of glass. CONSTITUTION:Each optical fiber 1 is welded in only both ends of bundle of the optical fiber and the clearances are provided to the intermediate parts of each optical fiber 1. As the definite method, for example, there are a method wherein the intermediate point parts of plural optical fibers 1 are bent and both ends are welded from the side faces and a method providing mutually the clearances by forming the tapers 4 in the intermediate parts of each optical fiber 1. Thereafter the each optical fiber 1 is spun in the low-temp. zone is softening point of glass. Thereby the welding of side faces of the fellow glass can be prevented and an image guide having excellent flexibility can be obtained even if the number of the optical fiber is increased.
