    • A multibeam scanner for scanning an image area with a plurality of laser beams, comprising a plurality of beam emitting points that emit a plurality of laser beams reaching the image area with respective time lags therebetween, a time lag determination unit that determines at least one of the time lags during a predetermined calculation time, a scan controller that controls the plurality of beam emitting points to emit the plurality of laser beams successively in the image area with the at least one of the time lags determined by the time lag determination unit. The multibeam scanner of the invention, comprises a photodetector that detects any one of the laser beams at a predetermined beam detection position. The time lag determination unit determines the time lag between the nth laser beam and the n+1th laser beam. Therefore, to scan the image area, the photodetector detects the first laser beam at the predetermined beam detection position, prior to the image area, and determines a scan start time for the first laser beam. Then, the scan controller starts controlling the first beam emitting point at the determined scan start time to emit the first laser beam in the image area. The scan controller further controls the n+1th beam emitting point to emit the nth laser beam in the image area with the calculated time lag between the nth laser beam and the n+1th laser beam.

    • A multibeam scanner capable of scanning an image forming area with constant beam amounts of laser beams. The multibeam scanner of the invention performs automatic power control (APC) on each of a plurality of beam emitting points one by one during corresponding time durations, respectively, in a non-image forming area. The laser beam emitted last among the plurality of laser beams is controlled to reach a predetermined beam detecting position within the corresponding time duration. Before scanning the image forming area, the multibeam scanner determines a scan start timing upon the detection of the laser beam emitted at the beam detecting position, which has been stabilized during APC. This arrangement allows the laser diode to avoid wasting time again and again, as rise time for stabilizing the laser beam for performing APC and for identifying the scan start timing, and to secure the time durations as long as possible. It is therefore possible to perform APC against the laser diodes properly during the sufficient time durations and, at the same time, possible to determine the scan start timing precisely by detecting the stabilized laser beam.

    • An optical scanner includes a light source, optical deflector, mirror, first photosensitive drum, and second photosensitive drum. The light source emits a first light beam and a second light beam. The optical deflector deflects the first light beam and the second light beam. The mirror has a reflecting part that reflects the deflected first light beam and a passing part that passes the deflected second light beam. The passing part is displaced from the reflecting part. The first photosensitive drum performs a development with a first toner having a first color. The reflected first light beam scans the first photosensitive drum in a main scanning direction. The second photosensitive drum performs a development with a second toner having a second color different from the first color. The passed second light beam scans the second photosensitive drum in the main scanning direction. The first photosensitive drum and second photosensitive drum are arranged in a sub scanning direction orthogonal to the main scanning direction.
