    • In an upright CT scanner, an X-ray source and a two-dimensional digital X-ray detector are mounted on a rotating platform with a vertical axis of rotation. During scanning, the X-ray source and the detector are on opposite sides of the rotational axis for orbiting about a body to thereby scan it with pyramid-shaped X-ray beam. During scanning, the source and detector can be jointly translated along a horizontal axis that is perpendicular to the rotation axis and parallel to the detector surface, to scan a specific part of a body that is not centered or a body that is too large. The mounting height and distance of source and the detector can also be adjusted.

    • A power-scalable hybrid technique to reduce blocking and ringing artifacts in low bit-rate block-based video coding is employed in connection with a modified decoder structure. Fast inverse motion compensation is applied directly in the compressed domain, so that the transform (e.g., DCT) coefficients of the current frame can be reconstructed from those of the previous frame. The spatial characteristics of each block is calculated from the DCT coefficients, and each block is classified as either low-activity or high-activity. For each low-activity block, its DC coefficient value and the DC coefficient values of the surrounding eight neighbor blocks are exploited to predict low frequency AC coefficients which reflect the original coefficients before quantization in the encoding stage. The predicted AC coefficients are inserted into the low activity blocks where blocking artifacts are most noticeable. Subject to available resources, this may be followed by spatial domain post-processing, in which two kinds of low-pass filters are adaptively applied, on a block-by-block basis, according to the classification of the particular block. Strong low-pass filtering is applied in low-activity blocks where the blocking artifacts are most noticeable, whereas weak low-pass filtering is applied in high-activity blocks where ringing noise as well as blocking artifacts may exist. In low activity blocks, the blocking artifacts are reduced by one dimensional horizontal and vertical low-pass filters which are selectively applied in either the horizontal and/or vertical direction depending on the locations and absolute values of the predicted AC coefficients. In high activity blocks, de-blocking and de-ringing is conducted by 2- or 3-tap filters, applied horizontally and/or vertically, which makes the architecture simple.

    • A programmable controller which combines microaddress control logic, memory, a microinstruction decoder, and I/O into a unitary, integrated device. The microaddress control logic is responsive to sequencing signals developed by the microinstruction decoder, and includes an address generator which develops the program address. The memory, which can be either PROM or RAM, is addressed by the address and outputs a microinstruction word to a pipeline register. The microinstruction word has an internal field which is coupled to inputs of the microaddress control logic and the microinstruction decoder, and a control field which is coupled to an output buffer. The output buffer includes multiplexers which permit either the program count or the control field to be multiplexed to the output pins of the device. When the program address is multiplexed to the output pins, the programmable controller can address external memory devices.

    • A system and method for imaging a three-dimensional scene having one or more objects. The system includes a light source, a detector array, a timing circuit, an inertial guidance system and a processor connected to the timing circuit and the inertial guidance system. The light source generates an optical pulse and projects the optical pulse on an object so that it is reflected as a reflected pulse.
