    • There are provided a system and a method for manufacturing an optical display device, in which optical films fed from two rolls which are the same in the direction of optical anisotropy, such as the direction of absorption axis, can be bonded to one and the other surfaces of an optical display unit so that the optical anisotropy of the one can be orthogonal to that of the other.The system includes: a first cutting and bonding apparatus 18 that is configured to handle a roll of a first sheet material F1 including a first optical film with a width corresponding to the short side of the optical display unit W and also configured to bond the first optical film to one surface of the optical display unit W and then to cut the first optical film into a length corresponding to the long side of the optical display unit W; and a second cutting and bonding apparatus 28 that is configured to handle a roll of a second sheet material F2 including a second optical film with a width corresponding to the long side of the optical display unit W and also configured to bond the second optical film to the other surface of the optical display unit W and then to cut the second optical film into a length corresponding to the short side of the optical display unit W.

Since the film main body (F) which is peeled from the release film (F12, F22) can be pressed to the release film (F12, F22) by the press member (200), the film main body (F) can be well prevented from being peeled from the release film (F12, F22).

    • The invention provides a method for manufacturing an optical display device including an optical display unit and an optical film that includes a polarizing plate and is bonded to the optical display unit. The method comprises the steps of: unwinding and feeding a long sheet material from a roll of the long sheet material, wherein the long sheet material includes the optical film, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and a release film laminated in this order and has undergone a slitting process in a direction parallel or at a constant angle to an absorption axis of the polarizing plate so that it has a width corresponding to a short or long side of the optical display unit; inspecting the optical film of the fed long sheet material to detect a defect; cutting a part of the long sheet material other than the release film into a length corresponding to a long or short side of the optical display unit, while separating the detected defect; bonding a non-defective cut piece of the optical film to a surface of the optical display unit; and rejecting a defect-containing part of the optical film.

A second optical film F21 is fed in an orthogonal direction with respect to the width direction from a second material roll R2 formed by winding the second optical film F21 in such a manner that an absorption axis B2 extends in the width direction, and then the second optical film F21 is cut and bonded to the other surface of the liquid crystal cell. Accordingly, it is possible to bond the first optical film F11 and the second optical film F21 in the crossed nicols relation, without the provision of the mechanism for rotating the liquid crystal cell W or the like.
