    • The subject invention provides mixed simulator systems that combine the advantages of both physical objects/simulations and virtual representations. In-context integration of virtual representations with physical simulations or objects can facilitate education and training. Two modes of mixed simulation are provided. In the first mode, a virtual representation is combined with a physical simulation or object by using a tracked display capable of displaying an appropriate dynamic virtual representation as a user moves around the physical simulation or object. In the second mode, a virtual representation is combined with a physical simulation or object by projecting the virtual representation directly onto the physical object or simulation. In further embodiments, user action and interaction can be tracked and incorporated within the mixed simulator system to provide a mixed reality after-action review. The subject mixed simulators can be used in many applications including, but not limited to healthcare, education, military, vocational schools, and industry.

    • An apparatus and method for titrating the oxygen content delivered to a patient via an open delivery system and reduce fire risk. The apparatus may include a nasal cannula or face mask and an anesthesia machine having an air flowmeter. The cannula may be in fluid connection with one or more gas outlets on the anesthesia machine. The cannula may provide a user-adjustable reduced O2 content gas flow to the patient. By providing an O2 gas mixture having a lower concentration of O2, the present invention significantly mitigates the risk of surgical fires. The apparatus may also include an anesthesia machine having an electronic flowmeter, either alone or in conjunction with the cannula, for maintaining oxygen saturation at a selected level. The apparatus may also include an anesthesia machine having an additional operating mode for use with an open delivery system.

    • The subject invention pertains to a novel method and apparatus for improving the efficacy of a medical treatment or diagnostic procedure by coordinating such treatment or procedure with a patient's breathing cycle. In a specific embodiment, the subject invention pertains to a novel method of coordinating a chest x-ray with a patient's ventilatory cycle. In a specific example, this invention concerns a novel device for interfacing a ventilator and an x-ray machine to ensure that an x-ray chest image can be taken at peak insufflation of the patient. The subject invention also relates to other medical procedures including, but not limited to, cardiac output measurement, chest imaging, inhalation therapy, oxygen delivery, blood pressure measurement, and pulse oximeter optoplethysmograms. By coordinating certain medical treatments and diagnostic procedures with a patient's breathing cycle, the subject invention improves the quality of medical care received by the patient.
