    • An embolic protection device (2000) comprises a collapsible filter body (102), a filter support (103) for supporting the filter body (102), and a tubular member (108) to which the filter support (103) is mounted. The filter support (103) comprises two round wires (116). Each wire (116) has a 'M'-shaped curve (120) in the wire (116) which acts as a strain distributing linking element. In an extended configuration, the concave portion of each curve (120) faces longitudinally in the distal direction. In a collapsed configuration, the concave portion faces radially inwardly towards the tubular member (108) and wraps around part of the tubular member (108) to define a compact, low-profile filter support (103). Tethers (500, 501) extend between the curves (120) and a sleeve (201) slidably mounted to the tubular member (108). The distal end of each tether (500, 501) is fixedly attached to the sleeve (201) and to the filter body (102). The sleeve (201) is slidable over the tubular member (108) between a pair of stops.

    • An embolic protection device comprises a collapsible filter element for delivery through a vascular system of a patient. The filter element comprises a collapsible filter body (2) and a filter support (3) for the filter body. The filter body has an inlet end (4) and an outlet and (5), the inlet end (4) of the filter body has one or more inlet openings (6) sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body (2) and the outlet end (5) of the filter body has a plurality of outlet openings (107) sized to allow through passage of blood but to retain undesired embolic material within the filter body (2). The filter support (3) is movable between a collapsed position for movement through the vascular system, and an extended outwardly projecting position to support the filter body in an expanded position. The filter support (3) comprises a generally tubular support frame defined by at least one wire (16).

    • A collapsible filter element (105) for a transcatheter embolic protection device (100) comprises a collapsible filter body (30) which is movable between a collapsed stored position for movement through a vascular system and an expanded position for extension across a blood vessel such that blood passing through the blood vessel is delivered through the filter element (105). A proximal inlet portion of the filter body (30) has one or more inlet openings (117) sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body (30) and a distal outlet portion of the filter body (30) has a plurality of outlet openings (119) sized to allow through-passage of blood, but to retain embolic material within the filter body (30). The filter body (30) is at least partially of laminate construction comprising a membrane (31) coated with a coating (32, 33) which is biocompatible, the thickness of the coating (32, 33) being from 4% to 40% of the thickness of the membrane (31). The coating (32, 33) may be of hydrophilic material. To facilitate retrieval of captured embolic material the distal portion and/or an intermediate portion of the filter membrane (31) may be stretchable. The filter body (30) may have regions of varying hardness or stiffness.
