CONSTITUTION:The objective antibacterial agent is composed of silver- containing compound and phosphoric acid-containing compound in amounts of 1-50 pts.wt., preferably 1-10 pts.wt. phosphorus to 1 pt.wt. silver, or contains a compound containing silver and phosphoric acid (e.g. silver phosphate, silver pyrophosphate or ammonium silver phosphate). Said antibacterial agent is utilized in various fields such as medicine and antibacterial polymeric material (0.05-0.5wt.% adding amount of antibacterial agent).

CONSTITUTION:An inorg. carrier containing a sterilizing agent is dispersed in a water-resistant polymer and the obtained dispersion is molded to prepare a sterilizing material for a cooling tower. From the aspect of the strong sterilizing power against bacteria of the genus Legionella and the safety to a human body, a silver ion, a copper ion or a compound thereof is proper as the sterilizing agent. As the inorg. carrier, crystalline aluminosilicate or activated carbon is pref. because it is prous and has a large specific surface area and can support a large amount of the sterilizing agent. As the water-resistant polymer, polypropylene or polyamide is designated. Further, it is proper to contain 20-90 pts.wt. of the above-mentioned sterilizing agent-containing inorg. carrier in 100 pts.wt. of the water-resistant polymer.

SOLUTION: This Hume pipe contains inorganic powder carrying antibacterial metal ions. A hydrous oxide, a phosphate, and an alkyl silicate containing much silicon (SiO2 content 60% or above) are preferable for the inorganic powder stably carrying metal ions in view of abundant acid resistance and continued corrosion resistance. Ions of silver, copper, zinc, nickel, and cobalt having strong antibacterial performance against thiobacillus and required to be added to the Hume pipe by a relatively small quantity are preferable for the antibacterial metal ions. Concrete, mortar, and a polymer material can be used for the material molding the Hume pipe. Polyvinyl chloride, an epoxy resin, an unsaturated polyester resin, polyethylene, and polypropylene can be used for the polymer material.

The silver is contained in an amount of preferably at least 0.8wt.%, especially at least 1.5wt.% in the antimicrobial agent. The specific surface area of the fine particles is preferably >=240m /g and the particle diameter is preferably 2μm, especially 0.8μm at the maximum.
