    • A method of optimizing SBS suppression is disclosed for use in an optical communication system including a light guide for transmitting light and means for producing phase modulation of the light using at least first and second tones. In the method, an operational region of SBS suppression is established as a function of the phase modulation of the light such that the operational region identifies combinations of first and second phase modulation levels at which optimum SBS suppression is achieved for the first and second tones. Thereafter, based on the operational region, the first and second phase modulation levels are adjusted such that the system operates with optimum SBS suppression. In one aspect, a contour map and associated method are introduced. The contour map is especially suited for use in optimizing SBS suppression in an optical communication system in which light is phase modulated using at least first and second tones for transmission of the phase modulated light via media which exhibits an SBS threshold. In another aspect, one of the sub-regions identified by the contour map may be selected as the operating point of the system based on certain characteristics of the contour map at and around the location of the selected operating point. In this manner, for example, the stability of the optical communication system may be improved in the event that the selected operating point is subject to drift.

    • An integrated optical transmitter for use in an optical system includes an optical head assembly having an optical beam generator for providing an optical beam and a lens assembly for collecting the optical beam and generating therefrom a formed optical beam. Interface optics receive the formed optical beam for coupling the beam to a modulator so as to reduce nsertion loss to the optical beam. The optical modulator receives the optical beam from the interface optics and provides a modulated optical beam in response to received modulation signals. The optical modulator is coupled to the interface optics to be in a fixed relationship therewith. The integrated optical transmitter can include a means for sampling the optical beam and controlling the temperature of and/or the current supplied to the optical beam generator for controlling the wavelength of the optical transmitter. The optical head assembly and the modulator can be compliantly mounted to a mounting surface reducing the effects of thermal stress on the performance of the optical transmitter.

    • The transmitter or receiver of the remote antenna system of the present invention includes a fiber optic link connecting the receiver or transmitter station with a remote antenna station. The optical carrier for the fiber optic link is produced by a dual optical signal generator, preferably in the form of two narrow-linewidth lasers frequency offset by a difference frequency corresponding to the millimeter-wave or microwave signal. If the invention is employed to convey a baseband signal from the transmitter station to the antenna station, a modulator at the transmitter station modulates the dual optical signal carrier with the baseband signal. The modulated signal is carried over the optical fiber to a photodetector at the remote antenna station which detects the millimeter wave difference frequency modulated by the baseband signal. If the invention is employed to convey a received millimeter wave signal from the remote antenna station to the receiver station, then a modulator at the remote antenna station modulates the dual optical signal carrier with the received millimeter wave signal. The modulated signal is carried over the optical fiber to a photodiode at the receiver station which detects the baseband contained in the millimeter wave signal.
