    • In one embodiment, a first access request is received from a mobile device. The access request may be received through a first access medium for a virtual access point name (APN). A session is created with a service using a first real access point name (APN) for the mobile device. A second access request is received through a second type of access medium. The request may be received through a second virtual APN. A session is determined that is active for the mobile device through the first access medium and the second access request is assigned the first real APN even though the request is received through a second access medium. The continuity of the connection may then be maintained because the first real APN is still being used. In this case, a handoff of the connection from the first access network to the second access network is performed while the connection to the service is maintained through the first real APN.

    • A mobile communication system has a plurality of satellites and mobile stations. A mobile station is capable of communicating with more than one satellite. A satellite transmits a set of neighboring cell data to one of the mobile stations. The data set comprises first and second portions related to communication with a first and a second satellite of the plurality of satellites, respectively. When the data set is received the first time by the mobile station, it decodes both first and second data portions to establish a neighboring cell list, which is stored within the mobile station. When the mobile station receives subsequent transmissions of neighboring cell data, it need only decode either the first data portion or the second data portion based on the presence or absence of an alert message.

    • In a cellular satellite mobile telecommunication system, cell reception measurements for cell broadcast channels (BCCH) at a user terminal (UT 1) are made in an idle mode when no call is being made. At the commencement of a call, the measurement information (31, FIG. 8) relating to the measurement made in the idle mode is encoded onto a slow control channel (SACCH up) associated with a speech channel (TCH) for speech communication from the user terminal to a remote ground station (SAN 1) via a satellite (3a), and the power of the speech channel transmitted to the user terminal from the satellite, and from the UT to the satellite, for the call, is set in dependence upon the report. The reported data can also be used to determine whether to make a cell or satellite handover.

    • Systems and methods for providing load based optimizations in communication networks are provided. A network device that provides network management and exchanges control messages with other network devices in the communication network can be modified to masquerade as a radio access transceiver to obtain radio access transceiver load information. The network device can be modified to include a radio-related interface and can communicate messages with the radio access transceivers to setup a radio access transceiver connection for exchange of load information. The radio access transceiver load information can then be used in the core network to provide optimizations for the loaded radio access transceivers. The optimizations can include modifying packet flows to decrease the bandwidth needed and switching one or more packet flows to another radio access transceiver.

    • An apparatus is provided in one example embodiment and includes a gateway configured to be coupled to a profiling function that evaluates past end user behavior in order to make a point of attachment determination in a network for the end user. In cases where the end user had previously operated as a nomadic user, the profiling function triggers the gateway to define an Internet Protocol (IP) service for the end user and the point of attachment is the gateway. In more specific embodiments, if the end user is determined to be mobile, the gateway establishes a mobility tunnel to a hierarchical gateway, which acts as the point of attachment to the network for the end user. In still other embodiments, the profiling function includes querying a database that includes a profile for the end user. A profile for the end user can be identified in a RADIUS accounting request.
