    • An apparatus according to the invention for positioning an external device (50), in particular a calibration device of a cruise control system or a lane-keeping assistant, with respect to a motor vehicle has a left-hand measuring unit (18) for positioning on a left-hand side of the motor vehicle, wherein the left-hand measuring device can be positioned in such a manner that a measuring target on a left-hand wheel of the motor vehicle and a left-hand target unit (14) of the external device (50) can be detected from the left-hand measuring unit. The apparatus also comprises a right-hand measuring unit (20) for positioning on a right-hand side of the vehicle such that a measuring target on a right-hand wheel (6) of the motor vehicle and a right-hand target unit (16) of the external device (50) can be detected from the right-hand measuring unit (20). Each of the two measuring units comprises a reference target (12, 44) which can be seen by the other measuring unit (18, 20) in each case, an image capture unit (38, 40) and an optical device (22, 30). The image capture unit (38, 40) has an image capture surface (72, 80, 88) with a first image area (74, 82, 90) for acquiring an image of the measuring target (8, 10) on the motor vehicle wheel (4, 6), with a second image area (76, 84, 92) for acquiring an image of the target units (14, 16) of the external device (50) and with a third image area (78, 86, 94) for acquiring an image of the reference target (12, 44). The optical device (22, 30) is arranged and designed so as to obtain an image of the measuring target (8, 10) of the motor vehicle wheel in the first image area (74, 82, 90), an image of the target units (14, 16) of the external device (50) in the second image area (76, 84, 92) and an image of the reference target (12, 44) in the third image area (78, 86, 94). The apparatus also comprises an evaluation device (42) which is designed to determine the position of the external device (50) with respect to the motor vehicle from the images of the measuring targets (8, 10) of the motor vehicle wheels, of the target units (14, 16) of the external device (50) and of the reference targets (12, 44), as acquired by the image areas of the two measuring units, by comparison with reference images of the measuring targets (8, 10) and of the target units (14, 16).
