    • According to the inventive method for controlling an electronically commutated polyphase d.c. motor, a phase selector circuit (4) selects just one phase at a time to be conveyed to a commutation recognition circuit (5). After each commutation recognised by the commutation recognition circuit (5), an impulse (9) of constant duration (t_blank), generated by a monoflop (7), commutates a phase discriminator circuit (6) and, by means of said phase discriminator circuit, a commutation logic (3) in a fixed, predetermined order. This is carried out independently of the direction of rotation of the motor (1) in a sequential switching mechanism embodied by the commutation logic (3). When the motor (1) rotates in the preferred direction, constant conduction angles of 120° per phase are achieved. When the motor rotates in the opposite direction, this method results in very different conduction angles of the individual phases, these different conduction angles producing an anti-torque moment in accordance with the course of the particular voltages induced in the individual phases. Said anti-torque moment causes the motor to slow to a standstill and then start in the preferred direction. The electronics unit shown in the figure does not distinguish between the two directions of rotation. For this reason, no additional electronics are necessary to enable the motor to restart safely from the opposite direction.

    • The invention relates to an electronically commutated engine comprising a stator carrying several winding phases and a rotor. The individual winding phases can be controlled through final power stages over time-delayed periods divided into control times and dead times. To reduce power loss during the final power stages and, thus, to raise effectiveness, especially in the case of heavy currents, the invention provides for the control periods to be divided into an initial period and an end period. When the engine currents are low, clocking by pulse-width modulation occurs only during the initial or end periods, whereas, when currents are heavy, the current is fully switched through during the initial periods and additionally for a more or less long part of the end periods or during the end periods and additionally for a more or less long part of the initial periods.

Noise produced when the electrical supply is connected to and disconnected from the excitation coils is minimized by flattening out the rising or falling edge of the current flowing into the excitation coils, by increasing the pulse width ratio in the rising edges of the control signals according to a pre-defined or pre-definable set value for the revolution speed or output of said motor from a low initial value to an operating value assigned to the set point value, and by reducing the pulse width rates, starting from the operating value in the falling edges of the control signals to a low final cut off value according to the actual value of the revolution speed or output of said motor before reaching zero.
