    • The present invention relates generally to a method for determining which radio channel to allocate to a mobile station for communicating via a mobile radio system, and a system for mobile radio communication in which a radio channel can be allocated to a mobile station. More particularly, the invention relates to a system and method for radio channel allocation where the radio quality on candidate radio channels is measured and the interference effects of establishing a radio connection on the candidate radio channels on already existing radio connections is estimated. Using these measurement results and estimates, as well as the information about the quality requested by the connection to be set up, it is determined which radio channel (if any) shall be allocated to the MS.

    • A server for use by a designated one of a number of mobile units in a cellular communications system including a plurality of cells having different service areas with respect to one another may be selected by, for each of the mobile units, assigning to each cell a category of preference for selection with respect to each other cell within the system, wherein for at least one of the cells, the assigned category of preference associated with a first mobile unit is different from the assigned category of preference associated with a second mobile unit. Then, for the designated mobile unit, the assigned category of preference for each of a number of candidate cells is determined. A first one of the candidate cells is then selected as serving cell for the designated mobile unit based upon whether the first one of the candidate cells has a higher category of preference than another of the candidate cells. Because categories of preference may differ for different mobile units, location-based services, based on categories of subscribers, may be provided. In other embodiments, a radio network may be optimized with respect to varying capabilities of installed radio base equipment.

    • A user equipment, UE, (20) determines a mobility state of a Wi-Fi access point, AP, as one of a moving mobility state and a non-moving mobility state along with control information relating to UE cell (re-)selection and/or handover behavior based on the determined mobility state of the Wi-Fi access point, AP. The UE then controls its cell (re-)selection and/or handover behavior in relation to the Wi-Fi access point, AP based on the determined control information. In a preferred embodiment, the UE can communicate with a cellular base station, BS, and with the Wi-Fi access point, AP. The UE detects the Wi-Fi AP, determines that the Wi-Fi AP is moving based on a moving AP indication, and controls cell (re-Selection and/or handover behavior of the UE based on the determination that the Wi-Fi AP is moving along with other information.

    • The invention relates to management of data packets and buffers comprising segments of data packets in a mobile communication system (1). Information associated with data packet segments is analyzed by a Base Station System (BSS) (100) housing a data buffer (120). Based on this information analysis, the BSS (100) can identify those segments (P(FIRST)-P(LAST)) in the buffer (120) that constitutes a complete data packet. Once identified, the segments can be discarded from the buffer (120). The information can include size information (S(k), S(k+1)), whereby the analysis comprises pairwise comparing the size (S(k)) of a current segment (P(k)) with the size (S(k+l)) of a next consecutive segment (P(k+l)). This size comparison enables identification of a first segment (P(FIRST)) and a last segment (P(LAST)) of the complete data packet. The information could also, or alternatively, include a notification provided in the header of the segment. This notification identifies the associated segment as the first or last segment of the data packet or an intermediate segment.
