摘要： A property tree user interface permits user assignment of values to metadata properties and user navigation of data, within a system that includes a data storage subsystem in which data items are organized and queried by way of properties. The property tree includes nodes that expose properties of data items. A user may interact with the property tree in order to effect an assignment of a property, in which case the value associated with the property in the data storage subsystem is modified. The property tree may also display nodes that represent folders within a hierarchical file system, nodes that represent properties with inherent hierarchy, and nodes that represent user-defined hierarchical properties, and the property tree may display such nodes in a carousel control.

摘要： A file system for displaying items of different types and from different physical locations. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a wide scope of items may be available. In other words, the system is able to represent items from multiple physical locations (e.g., different hard drives, different computers, different network locations, etc.) so that to a user all the items appear to be from one location. The file system utilizes virtual folders. The virtual folders expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, non-file items may be represented in the virtual folders. In other words, files that are stored in memory are located in a physical store. The virtual folders can be made to include items that are not currently represented in the physical store. Examples of non-file items are e-mails and contacts.

摘要： A standard user interface enables a user to filter an arbitrary unfamiliar data set intuitively and effectively. The illustrated interface includes a header control presenting labels, filters, and pulldown menus for each attribute of a data set, presented by an associated display control. The control communicates with a data provider through a set of APIs included in the computer's operating system. Through these APIs the data provider indicates the labels and menus to be displayed, while the header control passes new filter criteria to the data provider as it is specified by the user. The data provider filters the data set according to the user-specified filter criteria, and returns the filtered data set for display by the display control. Desirably, new filter criteria are passed to the data provider as they are being typed by the user, allowing the data provider to return successively smaller sets of result data, thus giving the visual impression of a shrinking data set. Non-textual filtering criteria can be input using non-textual interfaces, specified by the data providers. The illustrated control is data-agnostic, allowing its standardized use across a wide variety of data types and data providers.

The virtual folders expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. The virtual folders contain collections of items. The system includes a folder processor that obtains queries from a user and a relational database for storing information about the items. The folder processor first obtains a query from a user and passes the query to the relational database. The relational database provides results back to the folder processor, and based on the results from the relational database, the folder processor provides the results to the user as virtual folders. Users are able to work with the virtual folders through direct manipulation (e.g., clicking and dragging, copying, pasting, etc.).

When a network connection between a local or host computing device and one or more remote computing devices is present, remote items are represented using the same methodology as items located on the host computing device. To the user, remote and local items are indistinguishable. When the network connection is lost or items located on a remote computer are otherwise unavailable, the unavailable items remain represented on the host computing device. Unavailable items are represented in a way that informs the user that the items may not be fully accessed.
