    • An improved keypad and handheld electronic device are optimized for use by the thumbs of a user. The keypad is a reduced keyboard and includes a number of first keys, a number of second keys, and a number of third keys. The first keys are of a first shape that is of an elongated form and is tilted in a first direction relative to a common reference. The second keys are of a second shape that is of substantially the same elongated form and is tilted in a second direction relative to the common reference. The first shape enables the first keys to be used by one of the thumbs of a user, while the second shape of the second keys enables the second keys to be used by the other thumb of the user. At least some of the third keys are of a merged shape having portions of both the first shape and the second shape in order to enable use by either of the thumbs of the user.

    • Various dynamic tactile feedback is provided to the user of a handheld electronic device through a scrollwheel depending on the types of data, priority of particular data and user preferences. In one embodiment the type of feedback is determined by a software module, which analyses the data being displayed on a display screen, and provides differing types and levels of feedback including resistance to rotational movement, such as free slides, partially resisted rotation, and full stops, as well as lateral motion feedback such as “bumps,” “holes,” and plateaus, to the user through a scrollwheel or scrollwheel. Intelligent software decides what if any feedback should be associated with a particular type of feedback In another embodiment of the invention, information telling the software application to use a particular feedback type is embedded in the data. The system then provides tactile feedback at specified locations according to the embedded data. For example, software reads tactile triggers embedded into a data page, such as an email, electronic document or web page, and then translate these tactile triggers into dynamic tactile feedback which is provided to the user of the handheld device through the scrollwheel.

    • A portable folding electronic device has a base with a longer length dimension and a shorter width dimension and a user interface on one surface. The user interface may be oriented for use when the base has a portrait orientation. The device also has a screen unit with a longer length dimension and a shorter width dimension and a screen on one surface. A linkage connects the base to the screen unit. The linkage provides at least two degrees of freedom between the base and the screen unit such that the screen unit may be moved to a first position folded onto the base, with the length dimension of said screen unit aligned with the length dimension of the base, and to a second position tilted with respect to the base, with the length dimension of the screen unit aligned with the width dimension of the base.
