    • An object is to achieve both high-density output waveguides and uniformity of the losses between the output waveguides. In a waveguide type optical splitter, formed on a substrate are an input waveguide, a plurality of output waveguides, and a slab waveguide. The slab waveguide has an input end and an output end. The output end is in an arc shape with the input end or the vicinity being the center. The input waveguide is connected to the input end and a plurality of the output waveguides are connected to the output end. In the center portion of the output end, the output waveguides are directly connected to the output end. In the peripheral portion of the output end, the output waveguides are connected to the output end through the tapered waveguide whose waveguide width is widened towards the output end. Further, the opening width of the tapered waveguide becomes wider as going towards the periphery.

    • An external resonator which includes a multiple resonator with parameters which allow stable wavelength control, and a variable-wavelength light source includes such an external resonator are provided. The external resonator is a multiple resonator which is made up of first to third ring-shaped resonators, each having different light path length, and connected in series via optical coupling means. The parameters of the multiple resonator are characterized in that all the following Expressions , and hold: L1={M1/(M1−1)}L0    L2={M2/(M2−1)}L0    M2−1=(M1−1)2    where L0 is the light path length of the first resonator, L1 is the light path length of the second resonator and L2 is the light path length of the third resonator, and M1 and M2 are integers of 3 or greater.

    • An optical waveguide device expands the operable frequency range toward the higher frequency side. The device includes a single-mode optical resonator waveguide serving as an optical ring resonator, a single-mode optical input/output waveguide located close to the resonator waveguide in an area, and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed in such a way as to include a part of the resonator waveguide as its first optical waveguide arm and a part of the input/output waveguide as its second optical waveguide arm in the area.
