    • An industrial automation controller module includes a main module and an energy storage module (ESM) releasably connected to the main module. The ESM includes a back-up electrical power source such as a battery or a capacitor that is electrically connected to processor circuitry of the main module when the ESM is physically connected to the main module. In case of interruption of operating power to the processor circuitry of the main module, the back-up power source of the ESM supplies back-up power to the main module to allow for completion of an emergency save operation to save data to non-volatile memory in the main module. If the ESM includes a capacitor back-up power source, it is charged by the main module and the capacitor charge is dissipated if the ESM is separated from the main module. In all cases, the ESM can include one or more configuration parameters stored therein that allow the main module to validate (or not) the ESM for the requirements of the main module, with respect to type of back-up power source, product code or model, capacity of back-up power source, and the like. The main module can also initiate periodic testing of the back-up power source of the ESM.

    • An industrial automation input output module is protected against ingress of water, oil, debris, dirt and other contaminants without use of a potting compound. An elastomeric main seal provides a fluid-tight connection between inter-fitted inner and outer housing members that define a housing of the module. The one-piece main seal includes an integral light pipe portion with at least one light pipe that communicates light from an LED or other light source to a visual indicator opening in the housing, and the light pipe portion is also sealed to the housing to prevent ingress of contaminants through the visual indicator opening. Connectors pass through a wall of the housing and connector seals are used to prevent ingress of contaminants between the connectors and the housing. The connectors are also secured against rotation relative to the housing.

    • A universal serial bus (USB) locking connector includes a cable, a polymeric body connected to the cable, and a metallic male plug that projects axially from the body. One or more locking prongs extend axially alongside but are spaced from the male plug and are resiliently deflectable toward and away from the male plug. Each locking prong includes a leg having an outer end, and an enlarged tooth defined at the outer end. The enlarged tooth includes an inclined ramp surface and a transverse locking face. When the USB locking connected is mated with a conventional female USB connector, the locking prongs engage a peripheral edge of the female connector and capture the locking connector to the female connector to provide resistance to axial pull-out. In another arrangement, a USB connector locking system includes a female USB connector installed in a housing. A lock ring is movably connected to the housing adjacent the peripheral edge of the female USB connector. The lock ring is manually movable between an unlocked position and a locked position. When moved to its locked position, the lock ring frictionally engages an associated male USB connector that is mated with the female USB connector to inhibit disconnection of the associated male USB connector from the female USB connector.

    • An enclosure for electronics includes a body with a metal component and a polymeric component overmolded onto the metal component so as to be connected to the metal component without fasteners. The body defines a recess. A heat sink is defined in the metal component. A printed circuit board is located in the recess and includes a plurality of electronic components mounted thereon. The polymeric component includes at least one attachment feature that captures the printed circuit board at a select location in the recess such that: (i) at least a first one of the electronic components is electrically connected to a contact region of the metal component that is exposed through a portion of said polymeric component; (ii) at least a second one of the electronic components is electrically isolated from the metal component by an electrical isolation zone of the polymeric component; and (ii) at least a third one of the electronic components is located adjacent a thermal transfer region of the metal component that underlies the heat sink. The thermal transfer region is uncovered by the polymeric component so as to be exposed in the recess.
