摘要： The present invention provides a novel physical structure for a multilayer optical information recording medium including a plurality of information recording layers, and a recording method and a recording/reproduction apparatus for such a recording medium using the same. The multilayer optical information recording medium according to the present invention includes a test recording area for performing test recording for data recording and/or reproduction conditions in at least one of an inner zone and an outer zone. The test recording area is categorized as one of at least two categories of test recording areas (OPC-A area and OPC-B area). In the OPC-B area, an upper limit value is set on a recording power for the test recording.

摘要： In a method for recording information on an information recording medium having a data recording area for storing user data and a test area used for test recording by a recording apparatus, it is detected whether the test area is unusable when executing the test recording. The test recording is executed in the test area when the test area is detected not to be unusable, or executed in the data recording area when detected to be unusable. Management information relating to the test recording executed in the data recording area is recorded in a predetermined area. Hence, it is possible to eliminate a limit of number of times of test recording which depends on the size of the test recording area.

But if the smallest space is allocated to the user data area, the number of blocks to use is smaller than Ni. In such an information recording medium, if the number of blocks to store the space bitmap of a recording layer is Mi (where 1≦Mi≦Ni) and if Mi is equal to or greater than two, the space bitmap is divided into the 1st through Mith space bitmaps, each of which has a size that is still equal to or smaller than one block even when combined with a DDS, and each space bitmap is stored in an associated one of Mi blocks in a disc management area.

摘要： If a defective cluster in a spare area is managed with a defect entry, the size of a DFL will increase as the size of the spare area increases with an increase in the number of recording layers stacked in a disc. An information recording medium according to the present invention has pointer information indicating the location of the next available cluster in each spare area, and restricts the direction in which the spare area is used. Also, a defect entry indicating a defective cluster in the spare area is registered with the DFL. Thus, even if the size of the spare area 15 increases, the size of the DFL 21 can be kept relatively small. Furthermore, even after physical reformatting is done, a defective cluster, if any, in the spare area 15 can still be recognized as a defect and the control operation can be performed so that a replacement cluster is not re-allocated to that defective cluster (i.e., the defective cluster is not used).

An optical disc apparatus 100 illuminates an optical disc 1 simultaneously with a first laser beam and a second laser beam that have been mixed by a laser beam mixing and separating unit. The second laser beam has a shorter wavelength than the first laser beam. An objective lens 29 focuses the first laser beam and the second laser beam in a manner that the first laser beam has a greater focal length than the second laser beam. An information recording surface of the optical disc 1 is first illuminated with the first laser beam having a long wavelength. This eliminates the risk of damaging the information recording surface of the optical disc 1.
