    • Tools providing a flexible selection framework for automated processes. The framework can allow end-users to define their own selection criteria to select a data population to be processed (for example, by a business application). Hence, the tools provide enhanced control over what data is provided to which process. Some such tools employ metadata to define what information the client process needs, how the results will be returned to the client process, and/or what selection tools should be available to select data for the client process, as well as the available data selection tools, which can include both tools provided with a business application as well as third-party and/or user supplied selection tools. The framework might also provide an application programming interface that ensures consistent communication between the population selection engine and the selection tools themselves.

    • A product design method includes accessing a defined product design structure. The product design structure includes a number of customer concerns, a number of physical properties associated with components of the product, and a number of relation models. Each customer concern is associated with at least one physical property via at least one mathematical relationship defined in at least one of the relation models. The method also includes receiving a value associated with one or more of the physical properties and calculating (using one or more of the relation models) the effect of the received value associated with the one or more physical properties on one or more of the customer concerns. Furthermore, the method includes displaying the calculated effect on the one or more customer concerns and receiving one or more adjustments of the value associated with one or more of the physical properties to create a desired effect on one or more of the customer concerns.

    • An active fluid bearing system is provided. In one example, the active fluid bearing system includes an interface region formed between an outer surface of an inner member and an opposing inner surface of an outer member. The inner and outer members are disposed for relative rotation of the inner and outer members, and thereby form an interface region having a hydrodynamic bearing region and an active bearing region. A liquid is disposed in the interface region at the hydrodynamic bearing region, and is further disposed in the active bearing region if the inner and outer members are not relatively rotating. The bearing system is operable for evacuating at least a portion of the liquid from the active bearing region during relative rotation of the inner and outer members. The active bearing region may be a journal bearing or a thrust bearing.
