    • Various modifications to a printer to allow the printer to print on linerless adhesive media are described. In one embodiment, a release block is attached to the printer superior to a rubber drive roller. The release block limits the linerless adhesive media from contacting and/or remaining on the rubber drive roller when the linerless adhesive media is fed past print head. The release block may be a guide label, a piece of tape, or fixture. A guide label is adhesively attached and comprises a substrate, an adhesive layer, and release layers so that the linerless adhesive media does not stick to the guide label. Tape may be adhesively attached with a release layer attached to the tape. The fixture may be mechanically attached, magnetically attached, or adhesively attached to the printer. The release block may be removed at any time to allow for standard operation of the printer.

    • A device for validating a secure tag comprises: an optical source (such as one or more LEDs); a processor coupled to the optical source for controlling emissions therefrom; and a luminescence detector coupled to the processor. The processor is programmed to control the optical source to create a first and a second pulse sequence having first and second excitation parameters respectfully. The processor is also programmed to control the luminescence detector to measure first and second luminescence in response to the first and second pulse sequences respectively. The processor is programmed to validate the secure tag in the event that the first and second luminescence meet an acceptance criterion. A method of validating a secure tag is also described.

    • A method of enabling subsequent validation of an item having a data tag. Data may be read from a tag using an electronic reader. A readable marker, such as a barcode, may be selected from a plurality of different readable markers and applied in proximity to the tag. An association request can be created and communicated to a database, where the association request comprises data from the tag and data relating to the selected readable marker, so that the database may use data from the association request for subsequent validation of the tag. An authentication database for recording an association between a data tag and a readable marker applied to an item carrying that data tag are also described.

    • A method of charging for secure data management and item authentication. The method includes charging an initiation fee to a customer to create an entry for an item owned or manufactured by the customer. The entry may include (i) information associated with the item, and (ii) information about a security feature associated with that item. The method also includes charging an annual maintenance fee to maintain the entry for the customer; and charging an authentication fee each time the customer requests authentication of the item. The method may also include charging a lease fee to a customer for each secure reader the customer leases, where a secure reader is required to request authentication of an item.
