    • A protective cover for a sensing surface of a control sensor/proximity detector. The protective cover comprises a material having a preferred shore-A durometer hardness in the range of 60-90, a preferred tensile strength of 1320 psi (92.82 kilogram-force per square centimeter (kgf/cm2)) or greater, a preferred dielectric strength of around 300 volts/mil, and a preferred thermal conductivity of 0.3 to 0.5×1031 3 cal/sec2, and a temperature stability of about −55 to +200 degrees Celsius. The protective cover may be adhesively secured to the proximity detector so that the sensing surface is effectively covered. The protective cover may be in the form of a sheet or may be in the form of a cap. Preferably, the protective cover comprises silicone material.

    • Loudspeaker sounds in a communications handset may be amplified in predetermined frequency ranges through positioning the loudspeaker between ported and unported spaces. In one embodiment, an empty volume of space disposed in front of the loudspeaker is included to shape the frequency response of the loudspeaker. A port connecting this volume of space to the environment may be located at a longitudinal end of the handset. In one embodiment, the port may pass through a space formed by an antenna loop. An additional empty volume of space may be disposed behind the loudspeaker to further shape the frequency response of the loudspeaker.

    • A method and apparatus normalizes the playback loudness of stored sound recordings to avoid objectionable variations in perceived loudness between different sound recordings at the same volume setting. In an exemplary processing method, a stored sound recording is processed to determine its loudness. That loudness, or some value derived from it, is then used to set the playback gain used for playing back the sound recording. Thus, for a given volume setting, the playback gain can be set lower for louder recordings, and higher for quieter recordings. In one or more exemplary embodiments, sound recordings are processed as received, or at least some time in advance of their first playback, so that a loudness-based gain compensation parameter can be calculated and stored for them. The corresponding stored gain control parameter can then be selected and used responsive to selecting a particular sound recording for playback.

    • A beverage container with a grip formed in side and bottom walls thereof. The grip includes a V-shaped groove on a side wall that receives a finger of a consumer (e.g., a thumb or set of fingers) and a recess formed in a bottom wall of the container to receive one or more other fingers of the consumer's hand. When gripped in this fashion a lower corner of the bottle may be located in the palm of the consumer's hand. The groove in the side wall is formed in the side wall sufficiently close to the bottom wall to allow the hands of most consumers to use the grip. The V shape points upward. Either side of the V can be used depending on whether the consumer wishes to grip with their right hand or their left hand.
