    • An interconnection system is shown that enables an optical circuit board 300, having a number of optical devices 400, 500, to be easily connected to and disconnected from a backplane 100. The optical devices are positioned along a side edge 311 of a printed wiring board 310 and are adapted to interconnect with a like number of optical connectors 200 that are arrayed on the backplane in a row or column. Each optical plug is held in a holder 120, which is retained in backplane 100 by a clip 110. Each of the optical connectors is a plug that includes a ferrule 24, which encloses an optical fiber and projects from one end of the plug. Each of the edge-mounted optical devices includes a jack receptacle 410, 510 at its front end and has a cavity 401, 501 that is shaped to receive the optical plug. All of the jack receptacles are similarly shaped. Each cavity further includes a boss 421, 521 for receiving the ferrule. The plugs and jack receptacles are arranged to engage, but not interlock with, each other. The optical devices include two or more downward-extending pins 430, 530 that are received in corresponding holes 334, 335 in the printed wiring board for accurate positioning. Illustratively, optical device 400 includes a jack receptacle in its front-end portion 410 and its back-end portion 420; whereas optical device 500 includes a jack receptacle in its front-end portion 510 and one or more transducers 550, for converting between electrical and optical signals, in its back-end portion 520.

    • An arrangement for electromagnetically shielding a circuit carrying substrate includes first and second shielding members and a plurality of elastically deformable shielding connectors. The first shielding member has first and second dimensions exceeding first and second dimensions defined by the circuit and is disposed on a first side of the circuit. The second shielding member also has first and second dimensions exceeding first and second dimensions defined by the circuit and is disposed on a second side of the circuit. The first and second shielding members define at least one slot therebetween. Each of the plurality of shielding connectors is both plastically deformable and electrically conductive, and furthermore extends between the first shielding member and the second shielding member. The plurality of shielding connectors are disposed within and throughout said slot and spaced apart by a distance that is less than one-fourth the wavelength of an effective operating frequency of the circuit.

    • Detecting the presence of progress tones or progress audio messages and converting these tones or audio messages to a text form that is then displayed on a wireless telephone. This capability frees the user of the wireless telephone from having to place the wireless telephone to their ear and then, lower it to actuate the keypad when contacting a service provided by a remote communication system. A digital signal processor (DSP) is utilized to detect the progress tone and to convert audio messages to text using speech to text techniques. The operations of the DSP are controlled by the user performing operations on the keypad of the wireless telephone.

    • A cellular terminal for transmitting information defining its location upon placing a 911 call. The cellular terminal includes a global satellite positioning (GPS) device; and upon the user of the cellular terminal placing an emergency telephone call, the cellular terminal interrogates the GPS device to obtain the geo-coordinates. The cellular terminal then transmits the geo-coordinates to a cellular telecommunication switching system. The cellular switching system or a public safety answering point (PSAP) system responding to the 911 call converts the geo-coordinates into location information. In addition, the cellular terminal transmits to the cellular telecommunication switching system pre-defined vehicle description information if the cellular terminal is being utilized within a vehicle. If the cellular terminal is a hand held unit, the cellular terminal can be programmed to transmit personal characteristics of the person using the cellular terminal. In another embodiment, the cellular terminal obtains the geo-coordinates from the GPS device and converts the geo-coordinates to location information using information stored internal to the cellular terminal. The location information is transmitted to the PSAP via the cellular switching system rather than the geo-coordinates.

    • A modular, substantially infinitely-growable, multi-node switching system operates under distributed control to serve integrated circuit-switched and packet-switched traffic at the data rates appropriate for each type of traffic. The system comprises a plurality of interconnected identical switching units that form at least one communication switching node. A communication switching node is a modular building block of the system; a switching unit is a modular building block of a switching node, and hence also of the system. A plurality of communication endpoint nodes--illustratively PBXs--is connected to the one or more switching nodes for communicating with each other through the switching nodes. A plurality of communication links each connect a different one of the system's switching units to either (a) one of the communication endpoint nodes or (b) a unit of another switching node. All of the links have the same communication format. Each switching node includes a plurality of different ones of the identical switching units, and a communication medium that interconnects all of the units of the switching node to allow each unit of a node to broadcast all communications received from a connected link to all of the units of the node.

    • An optical connector is disclosed for terminating an optical cable 10 comprising a plastic optical fiber 11 surrounded by a protective jacket 12. The connector includes a housing having an exterior latch 201 that secures it to an adapter 31. The latch is constructed as a cantilever with its fixed end positioned toward a front end of the housing. The connector further includes a cable-holding structure that attaches to the jacket of the optical cable in such a manner that the plastic optical fiber 11 connects to an associated optical device without the use of a ferrule. One cable-holding structure includes a guide tube 45 that is made from metal and is pressed, or insert molded, into the back end of one plastic housing 40. A portion of the guide tube protrudes from the back end of the housing and is crimped onto the optical cable. Here, the optical cable is immovably attached to the housing. Another cable-holding structure includes an extender cap 21, a spring 60, and a guide tube 15 having an enlarged diameter at one end 16. The spring surrounds the tube and presses against its enlarged end. The spring also presses against an interior surface of the extender cap, which inserts into the back end of another plastic housing 22. Here, the optical cable is movably attached to the housing.

    • Allowing the ability to specify a general frame format and to automatically recognize similar frames at later points in time. A user initially selects the type of frame by watching a particular program such as the weather portion of a newscast and selects the desired frame using a hand-held control unit similar to the present hand-held control units for VCRs or television sets. When the frame appears on the television set, the user presses a button on the hand-held control unit, and the apparatus stores the frame that is presently being displayed. The apparatus then analyzes the stored frame to determine a set of recognition parameters. Those parameters are used to recognize similar frames in subsequent broadcast segments and to store one of those recognized frames for each broadcast segment. The user also specifies a time period during which the system will search for the specified frame. Further, the audio portion of a program segment is stored as long as frames are being recognized in that segment.

    • An apparatus that allows a pager to select a telecommunication terminal to which a telecommunications switching system terminates all incoming calls destined for the user of the pager. The selection is made under control of the user. The pager request that communication terminals transmit their identities to the pager. The pager then displays the identities of communication terminals to the user who selects one of the communication terminals to be the selected communication terminal. In response to the selection by the user, the pager signals the selected communication terminal. In turn, the selected communication terminal signals the telecommunications switching system that all incoming calls for the user of pager are to be terminated on the selected communication terminal.
