    • The following explanation is about a ranging technique of a terminal using a legacy support frame in a mobile communication system including a legacy system and an advanced system. According to one form of an embodiment of the present invention, the ranging method of the terminal for a base station in the mobile communication system having the legacy system and the advanced system comprises the steps of: receiving Secondary Super Frame Header (S-SFH) information from the base station; determining whether a frame composition used in the mobile communication system supports the legacy system; acquiring raging channel information for initial ranging, handover ranging, and periodical ranging from the S-SFH; and performing one or more ranging processes of the initial ranging, the handover ranging, and the periodical ranging in the base station by using the ranging channel information. At this point, the terminal receives the S-SFH through the first region for supporting the advanced system in the frame and the ranging channel is allocated to the second region for supporting the legacy system in the frame.

    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for requesting bandwidth in a wireless communication system. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method in which a mobile terminal makes a request for bandwidth in a wireless communication system is configured such that the mobile terminal receives, from a base station, information on whether or not the base station can compensate for changes in the bandwidth request quantity caused by the fragmentation or packing of a protocol data unit (PDU), the mobile terminal makes a request, to the base station, for bandwidth required for transmitting a first PDU, the mobile terminal separates the first PDU and generates a second PDU and a third PDU in consideration of the quantity of allocated bandwidth when the quantity of bandwidth allocated by the base station is smaller than the requested quantity, the mobile terminal transmits the second PDU to the base station, and the mobile terminal starts a first timer at the point in time the bandwidth allocation is received or at the point in time when the second PDU is transmitted, if said information indicates that the base station can compensate for changes in the bandwidth request quantity caused by the fragmentation or packing of a PDU.
