    • An optical head device according to the present invention includes a splitting section for splitting a light beam having been reflected from an optical storage medium. The splitting section includes: a first main region transmitting a first interfering portion; a second main region transmitting a second interfering portion; and first and second sub-regions through which the first interfering portion is transmitted with a lower rate than in the first main region and through which the second interfering portion is transmitted with a lower rate than in the second main region. The splitting section splits the reflected light beam into: a first main light beam transmitted through the first main region; a second main light beam transmitted through the second main region; a first sub-light beam transmitted through the first sub-region; and a second sub-light beam transmitted through the second sub-region. The splitting section further includes a swapping section for swapping a portion of the first sub-light beam with a portion of the second sub-light beam.

The invention provides an optical pickup head where offset is not generated in the TE signals even during tracking with the objective lens when a two-layered disk is used.

    • An optical pickup head device includes a diffraction grating for generating zero-order diffracted light and at least first-order diffracted light and provides a tracking error signal with a DPP method. The diffraction grating includes grating patterns with a nonuniform period or phase. The size of the first-order diffracted light converged on an optical recording medium is larger in the direction parallel to a tangent to the track than in the direction perpendicular to the tangent. P1/P0>PW2/PW1 is established, where PW1 represents the power that is required to record information on the optical recording medium, PW2 represents the maximum power that allows information recorded on the optical recording medium to be reproduced without being erased, P0 represents the light amount of the zero-order diffracted light converged on the optical recording medium, and P1 represents the light amount of the at least first-order diffracted light converged on the optical recording medium. This configuration makes it possible to detect a tracking error signal with reduced offset, even if a recordable optical recording medium having two information recording planes is used.

    • An optical head device includes a light source for emitting at least one of a coherent beam and a quasi-monochromatic beam; a collection optical system for collecting the beam to an information memory medium having a track which has at least one mark and at least one space; a light detector having a plurality of detection areas for receiving the beam reflected by the information memory medium and outputting a signal in accordance with a light amount of the beam received; and a tracking error signal generator for receiving the signals output from the light detector and generating a tracking error signal based on the signals. The tracking error signal generator reduces a difference between a first signal amplitude and a second signal amplitude. The first signal amplitude is an absolute value of a difference between first and second signal levels. The second signal amplitude is an absolute value of a difference between the first and third signal levels. The first signal level is a value of the tracking error signal obtained when the beam emitted by the light source is radiated to a center of the track. The second and third signal levels are, respectively, a maximum value and a minimum value of the tracking error signal obtained when the information memory medium is scanned by the beam emitted by the light source in a direction perpendicular to the track.
