    • A valve timing control apparatus for an engine. Presence/absence of a torque demand (xtq) is estimated upon starting of a lock pin release control to thereby alter a change rate (&bgr;) of a target phase angle in dependence on presence/absence of the torque demand (xtq). Unless torque demand is issued, the change rate is set to a small value (&bgr;2) for suppressing the change of the target phase angle (&thgr;t) after detection of release of the lock pin in order to avoid a shock unexpected by a driver. When the torque demand is issued, the change rate is set to a large value (&bgr;1) for allowing the target phase angle to approach speedily to a base target phase angle (&thgr;map) for thereby minimizing a delay in response involved in the phase angle detection through the lock pin release control.

    • A valve timing control system for an internal combustion engine capable of accurately accomplishing valve timing control irrespective of variation of the oil pressure to be applied to an hydraulic actuator. The apparatus comprises an hydraulic actuator for changing an operating angle of a cam of a cam shaft to advance or retard a valve timing in the internal combustion engine, a pump for sending a lubricating oil under pressure to the hydraulic actuator, an oil supply quantity adjusting valve for adjusting a quantity of the lubricating oil to be supplied to the hydraulic actuator, and a control unit for estimating a driving force of the hydraulic actuator on the basis of an oil pressure of the lubricating oil on the downstream side of the pump. The controlled variable for the oil supply quantity adjusting valve is determined on the basis of the estimated value of the driving force of the hydraulic actuator.

    • A video data processor disposed in addition to a printer controller includes a video data leading edge sensor for receiving a video signal of characters and objects and attaining therefrom a leading edge of video data, a contour display controller for generating data representing a contour on the basis of the leading edge data, a pattern display controller including pattern storage sections for keeping therein a plurality of display pattern data items and a pattern selector for selecting a predetermined display pattern item from the plural display pattern data items, and a logic circuit for producing a modulated video signal from data outputted from the contour display controller and data created from the pattern display controller and outputting the modulated video signal therefrom. Thanks to this configuration, consecutive dot data can be represented as a regular pattern. In a printing apparatus and a printing method, the quantity of toner consumption is efficiently decreased independently of resolution of the printing apparatus while keeping the image of original data unchanged.

    • A material conveying apparatus. A pair of winding and guiding rollers are spaced apart from a rotating drum. The winding and guiding rollers are adapted to guide a material according to the curvature of the rotating drum and wind it around a part of the outer circumference thereof. At least one nipping roller is in contact with the outer circumference of tile rotating drum. The at least one nipping roller has an elastic member which deforms according to the curvature of the outer circumference of the rotating drum. In addition, the at least one nipping roller has a plurality of roller portions disposed along the axial line of the rotating drum. Each of the roller portions is independently rotatable. At a material winding portion defined by the pair of winding and guiding rollers, the at least one nipping roller is pressed into contact with the outer circumference of the rotating drum at a material winding portion by the pair of winding and guiding rollers, so that the at least one nipping roller rotates correspondingly with respect to the rotating drum at the material winding portion, the material is nipped between the rotating drum and the at least one nipping roller, and the nipping roller applying conveying force to the material.
