    • An electro-optical device with a first substrate having a plurality of non-overlapping first electrodes on a major surface and a second substrate mounted to oppose the first substrate and having a plurality of non-overlapping second electrodes on a major surface, and the second electrodes are substantially perpendicular to the first electrodes, and adjacent second electrodes are disposed at equal intervals.     • An electro-optical plasma addressing device comprises a first substrate; a set of parallel first electrodes formed on the first substrate, a second substrate disposed opposite to the first substrate; a set of parallel second electrodes formed on the second substrate; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and second substrates; walls formed on the second electrodes so as to form discharge chambers by partitioning a space formed between the liquid crystal layer and the second substrates; and an ionizable gas sealed in the discharge chambers. Each second electrode has a terminal portion, resistive portions connected to the terminal portion, and discharge portions connected respectively to the extremities of the resistive portions, and these portions of the second electrode are formed in a plane. In a modification, the second electrode has a laminate construction consisting of a terminal portion formed on the second substrate, a resistive portion formed on the terminal portion, and discrete discharge portions formed and arranged at a specified pitch on the resistive portion.

    • A plasma addressed display is intended to improve structures of electrodes and barrier ribs for stabilizing the discharge characteristics and enhancing the yield and the image quality. The plasma addressed display has a flat panel structure in which a display cell is laminated on a plasma cell. The plasma cell has discharge channels sequentially arranged along the scanning direction. The display cell is joined to the plasma cell, and it has signal electrodes sequentially arranged in the direction perpendicular to the scanning direction, and liquid crystal in contact with the signal electrodes. The plasma cell has a lower substrate joined to the display cell side, pairs of anode electrodes and cathode electrodes disposed in discharge channels, and barrier ribs formed on the substrate so as to partition the discharge channels from each other. The cathode electrode is positioned at an approximately central portion of one discharge channel partitioned by the two adjacent barrier ribs, and the corresponding anode electrode is brought in contact with one, positioned on the downstream side of the scanning direction, of the two adjacent barrier ribs.

    • A plasma addressed electro-optical display is disclosed which is capable of improving current resistance of discharge electrodes disposed below cover glass to be similar to that of discharge electrodes in an effective frame and which, therefore, is enabled to be free from disconnection the reliability to be improved. The plasma addressed electro-optical display has a plasma cell formed by disposing a thin dielectric plate on a first substrate having a main surface on which a plurality of substantially parallel discharge electrodes are formed in such a manner that a predetermined distance is provided between the first substrate and the thin dielectric plate and by hermetically sealing the periphery of the first substrate and the thin dielectric plate with a sealing portion; and a second substrate disposed on the thin dielectric plate and having electrodes intersecting the discharge electrodes at substantially right angles on an opposite surface thereof in such a manner that an electro-optical material layer is interposed between the thin dielectric plate and the second substrate, wherein barrier ribs for separating the plasma cell are formed on the discharge electrodes apart from the sealing portion, a cover glass layer covering the discharge electrodes is formed in at least a region between the barrier ribs and the sealing portion, and assuming that the thickness of each of the discharge electrodes is t, the width of the same in an effective frame is W.sub.1 and the width of the same below the cover glass is W.sub.2, a predetermined equation is satisfied.

    • A discharge panel (2) includes substrates (3, 8) bonded together with a gap and ionizable gas sealed within the gap. Discharge electrodes including an anode (9) and a cathode (9a) having a strip pattern are formed on the lower substrate (8) so as to divide the gap into discharge channels (12). A barrier rib (10) is disposed over each anode (9) covering one side wall of the anode (9) so that a portion is exposed to the ionizable gas in the discharge channel (12). The cathodes (9a) are free of the barrier ribs (10) and are exposed to the ionizable gas in the discharge channel (12). The elimination of barrier ribs (10) from the cathodes (9a) increases the effective display region. In an alternate embodiment, the barrier ribs (10), the anodes (9) and a cathodes (9a) are of the same width and same pitch, and provide for a simplification in the manufacturing process.
