    • A printer has a sheet housing unit for storing a heat-sensitive adhesive sheet having a heat-sensitive adhesive layer on one side and a printable surface on the other side. A set of pull-out rollers pulls the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet out of the sheet housing unit and transports the sheet in a given direction, and a cutter device cuts the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet that has been transported by the pull-out rollers. A printing device has a thermal print head for printing letters or images on the printable surface of the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet, and a print platen roller for transporting the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet in the given direction. A thermal activation device has a thermal-activation thermal head for heating the heat-sensitive adhesive layer, and a thermal activation platen roller for transporting the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet in the given direction. A first drive unit drives the pull-out rollers and a second drive unit drives the print platen roller. A drive control device controls the first drive unit and the second drive unit independently of each other.

    • Provided is a printing and thermal activation device for a heat-sensitive adhesive sheet that is compact, lightweight, and simple in structure. The heat-sensitive adhesive device for a heat-sensitive adhesive sheet includes a thermal head capable of printing on a printable layer and thermal activation for a heat-sensitive adhesive layer. When the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet is inserted, a platen roller and the thermal head are operated to transport the heat-sensitive adhesive sheet while printing on the printable layer. The heat-sensitive adhesive sheet is cut with a cutter unit at a predetermined position and then the cut sheet passes through a transporting roller pair and is guided to a reversing mechanism. The heat-sensitive adhesive sheet makes almost one rotation on an outer periphery of a reversing roller and is reversed, and then is transported by the transporting roller pair and the platen roller starting reverse rotation while the heat-sensitive adhesive layer is thermally activated with the thermal head.

    • An array of heat elements is driven by a driving circuit including a plurality of control units operative to sequentially carry out generation of heat efficiently even with using a relatively small capacity of a power supply and without relying on processing by CPU, thereby achieving fast heat generating operation while saving electric power. The thermal head is provided with a plurality of heat generating units each being comprised of a heat resistive element for generating heat by current flow and an electrode for supplying a current to the heat resistive element, and a plurality of switching elements for controlling supply of current to respective one of the heat generating units. The heat generating unit is constructed such that its resistance increases according to a temperature rising of the heat resistive element by the current supply so as to reduce an output of a driving current. The switching element is composed of, for example, a thyristor operative to turn off the current supply when the current flowing therethrough is reduced below a given level. A voltage between the switching element and the corresponding heat generating unit is monitored to detect the turning-off of the switching element so as to constitute a turning-off detector. The detection of the turning-off indicates the completion of the heat generation or the finish of current supply. Thus, after the detection of the turning-off, a next switching element is initiated to start generation of heat in an adjacent or subsequent heat generating unit.
