    • Systems and techniques for identification of items using radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags exhibiting a high sensitivity to signals such as signals emitted by an RFID reader. An RFID tag includes an amplification circuit operative to detect and amplify a signal received from an RFID reader, in order to allow for processing of and response to the signal. The amplification circuit may be powered by a battery, suitably a flexible printable battery. Alternative or additional power sources may be used, such as a solar cell or a magnetic coupling, and depending on the design and operation of the tag, these power sources may be used instead of the battery or to recharge the battery if required.

    • Apparatuses, methods and systems used to reduce the time needed to process images of a bar code or optical code captured by a image bar code scanner. Image bar code scanners read bar codes or optical codes by capturing digital images of the codes using an image capture device and then processing the captured images to decode the optical code or bar code. The processing time is reduced by rotating the images to align the axis of the codes contained in the captured images with the rows of photo detectors in the image capture device.

Noise information affecting bar code scanning operations is stored and a scan signal is monitored. Upon detection of a scan of a bar code, the signal strength of the scan signal is evaluated and signal to noise ratio values are computed. Signal to noise ratio information is used to favor or disfavor candidate decoding results. In addition, signal to noise ratio thresholds are set according to appropriate criteria. Decoding results are evaluated using the signal to noise ratio thresholds and accepted or rejected depending on whether the thresholds are met. In addition, thresholds for recognition of transitions based on peaks may be set based on expected noise affecting the scan signal, and allowed or excluded based on whether a rise from a negative peak, or fall from a positive peak, meets the threshold.
