    • A timing clock extraction circuit for extracting from a multilevel code signal, transmitted at a predetermined baud rate, in which cross timings with a reference level are generated at frequency timings several times the baud rate, a clock pulse train at the baud rate and obtaining discriminative data from the multilevel code signal in accordance with the extracted clock pulse train. The timing clock extraction circuit includes a detector for detecting cross timings between the multilevel code signal and a predetermined threshold value; a synchronization control circuit for outputting a clock pulse train having a frequency several times said baud rate in synchronism with the cross timings; a clock generator for dividing the several-time clock pulses to generate a plurality of trains of baud rate clock pulses in different phase from each other; and a decision unit for distinguishing a baud rate clock pulse train from the plurality of trains of baud rate clock pulses which are synchronized with discriminative points of the multilevel code signal by using the cross timings and the clock pulse train having a frequency several times the baud rate.

    • A differential amplifier formed of MISFETs includes a differential amplification stage and a pair of cascade amplification stages which receive outputs from the differential amplification stage. In each of the cascade amplification stages, an amplifying MISFET which receives an input signal at its source has a channel conductivity of opposite type to that of the differential input MISFETs of the differential amplification stage. The differential amplifier with this construction has good frequency characteristics. Since the pair of cascade amplification stages make the currents taken from a pair of outputs from the differential amplification stage equal to each other, the operating balance of the differential amplification stage is not affected. The differential amplifier further includes a feedback circuit which detects the operating points of these cascade amplification stages by referring to the outputs of the cascade amplification stages, and generates a control voltage by comparing the operating points thus detected with a reference potential. The control voltage is fed back to the gates of the amplifying MISFETs in each cascade amplification stage. As a result, the operating point of each cascade amplification stage can be stabilized irrespective of variations in the characteristics of the MISFETs or the changes of their characteristics.

    • A charging member is provided which can not easily change in charging performance even because of its service over a long period of time. The charging member has a conductive support, an elastic layer and a surface layer. The elastic layer comprises spherical particles in such a way that the spherical particles are exposed at least in part to the surface of the elastic layer so as to make the surface of the elastic layer roughened; the spherical particles are at least one type selected from the group consisting of spherical silica particles, spherical alumina particles and spherical zirconia particles; the surface of the elastic layer is overlaid with the surface layer in such a way that the surface profile of the elastic layer is reflected on the surface profile of the charging member; and the surface layer comprises a high-molecular compound having a specific constituent unit.
