    • A power management architecture for an electrical power distribution system, or portion thereof, is disclosed. The architecture includes multiple intelligent electronic devices (“IED's”) distributed throughout the power distribution system to manage the flow and consumption of power from the system. The IED's are linked via a network to back-end servers. Power management application software and/or hardware components operate on the IED's and the back-end servers and inter-operate via the network to implement a power management application. The communications between the IED's and the back-end servers are facilitated through network security devices such as firewalls. The architecture provides a scalable and cost effective framework of hardware and software upon which such power management applications can operate to manage the distribution and consumption of electrical power by one or more utilities/suppliers and/or customers which provide and utilize the power distribution system.

    • A method of storing data in a utility monitoring system includes monitoring a characteristic of a utility system in an intelligent electronic device (IED) to produce monitored characteristic values that are buffered in the IED. The IED is communicatively coupled to a server via a network. The monitored characteristic values are indicative of the characteristic. The method further includes storing a first monitored characteristic value of the buffered monitored characteristic values periodically at a first logging interval in a memory of the IED. The method further includes storing a second monitored characteristic value of the buffered monitored characteristic values periodically at a second logging interval in the memory of the IED in response to satisfying a criterion. The second logging interval is distinct from the first logging interval.

    • A monitoring system includes a discoverable wireless device, a proximity monitor, and a monitoring server. The proximity monitor is configured to automatically discover the discoverable wireless device in response to the discoverable wireless device being within a wireless range of the proximity monitor. The monitoring server is communicatively connected to the proximity monitor via a communications network. The monitoring server is configured to i) receive proximity information associated with the discoverable wireless device from the proximity monitor, and ii) transmit an instruction signal based on the received proximity information to an electrical component located remotely from the proximity monitor. The instruction signal causes the electrical component to modify an operating parameter of the electrical component.

    • A monitoring system includes at least one monitoring devices coupled to the electrical power distribution system at selected locations for collecting data related to the operation of the monitored system. The monitoring device(s) includes a communication port and processors programmed to segment the collected data into blocks optimized for user analysis operations, encrypt the segmented blocks of data, bundle the encrypted blocks of data with unencrypted metadata that identifies the data blocks by at least the monitoring location at which the encrypted blocks of data were obtained and the type of data, and transmit the encrypted blocks of data with the unencrypted metadata. The system includes at least one client device that has a communication port that is coupled to the monitoring device(s) and the client device and that has a processor programmed to generate and transmit queries regarding selected ones of the encrypted blocks of data. A monitoring service is coupled to the monitoring device(s) and includes a processor programmed to receive and store the encrypted blocks of data with the unencrypted metadata from the monitoring device(s), process the unencrypted metadata, and retrieve and transmit the selected ones of the encrypted blocks of data in response to the queries from the client device.

    • An electrical power monitoring system is provided with a proxy server between at least one monitoring device and at least one client device for processing and transforming messages and context-specific caching. The electrical power monitoring system includes at least one monitoring device coupled to an electrical power distribution system for sensing and storing data representing operating characteristics of the power distribution system. At least one client device is coupled to the monitoring device for requesting data from the monitoring device and processing, storing and presenting data received from the monitoring device, and a communications network is coupled to the monitoring and client devices. The proxy server is coupled to the communications network for receiving messages from the client device as a virtual device, processing the messages, and altering the messages before communicating the messages to the monitoring device to which the messages from the client devices are directed, or deferring communication of at least portions of the messages to the actual monitoring device to which the requests are directed until a later time.
