    • A digital white balance device is simply implemented in a digital processing scheme by employing a grey world algorithm. In the device, a timing controller receives vertical and horizontal synchronization signals of an input image and produces a timing control signal. An RGB multiplier multiplies input RGB image data by RGB gains received from an RGB gain controller. A first YCbCr averaging unit converts input RGB image data to YCbCr image data, and obtains first YCbCr averages of this YCbCr image data. A second YCbCr averaging unit converts output RGB image data to YCbCr image data, and obtains second YCbCr averages of this YCbCr image data. According to the timing control signal, the RGB gain controller compares the second YCbCr averages with predetermined target YCbCr averages, respectively, and obtains RGB gains based on the first YCbCr averages, according to the compared result, and provides them to the RGB multiplier.

    • In a CMOS image sensor of the invention, a dynamic range is varied at a per-pixel level by a light amount to prevent saturation without degrading color reproduction of an overall image. A photo diode generates charges in accordance with a received light amount. A drive transistor amplifies the charges generated in the photodiode at a given gain. Further, a saturation detector receives an output voltage from the drive transistor and judges the image sensor saturated if the output voltage is beyond a limited level. A switch switches on/off in response to the judgment of the saturation detector. Also, a plurality of floating diffusions store the charges of the photodiode transferred through the switch. The floating diffusions are selectively connected to both the photodiode and a gate of the drive transistor at on/off the switch.

A method of grouping pixels in a 2d digital image according to an aspect of the invention may include: determining whether a target pixel in an input image is included in a labeling section; determining whether the target pixel is connected to a previous pixel of the target pixel and an upper pixel located adjacent to and above the target pixel to perform a labeling process, and renewing a label table while saving a labeling result in a line memory when the target pixel is included in the labeling section and is a valid pixel including object information; and grouping pixels of the input image using the labeling result and the renewed label table, and renewing a group.

The edge detector calculates an edge value using brightness relation with neighboring pixels with respect to each of pixels of an input image. The effective edge judging unit determines effective edge pixels. The effective edge classifying unit determines weak edge pixels and strong edge pixels. The 2-D HPF applying unit applies a first 2-D HPF to the weak edge pixels, and applies a second 2-D HPF to the strong edge pixels to generate edge strengthening values. The edge strengthening value applying unit adds the edge strengthening values to brightness values of the respective pixels of the input image.
