    • A disconnect switch and grounding apparatus therefor particularly adapted for use in gas insulated substations. The disconnect switch comprises a chamber having a pair of electrical conductors entering the chamber. Supporting the conductors and insulating them from contact with the chamber itself are insulators, which may be sealingly placed so as to prohibit the escape of the gas. A fixed contact member electrically attached to the first of the pair of conductors and a movable contact member is electrically attached to the second pair of conductors. A movement mechanism to move the movable contact members so as to make and break contact with the fixed contact member. A grounding strip electrically attached to the movable contact member, positioned so as to come in contact with the chamber wall immediately after the breaking of contact between the fixed and the movable contact members. The movement mechanism comprises a linkage having two links, the first link attached at one end to the movable contact member and the other end connected to the second link, the other end of the second link being connected to a shaft member. The shaft member sealingly extends through the wall of the chamber having attached to it on the outside of the chamber a handle for causing the shaft to rotate. The shaft upon rotation engages the linkage causing the movable contact member to make or break contact with the fixed contact member and respectively the ground strip to move away from or come in contact with the wall of the chamber.

    • A novel solenoid assembly is shown to include a solenoid having an armature and a delay member. The delay member delays movement of the armature from a first position to a second position until some desired condition occurs, for example, until a desired period of time has passed, until the solenoid is capable of generating a desired amount of force or until the current applied to the solenoid reaches a desired level. In a preferred embodiment, the delay member is a spring positioned to bias the armature against movement until the desired condition has occurred. In such an embodiment, the spring may be positioned to exert force against a shoulder formed on the armature. It is also preferred for the solenoid assembly to include a spacer, positioned between the solenoid and the mechanism being controlled by the solenoid. The spacer serves to space the armature from the mechanism when the armature is in the first position. In a further embodiment, the solenoid assembly further includes an extension member attached to the armature. In a still further embodiment of the invention, a body having a mass is attached to the armature for movement with the armature. In another embodiment, a method is provided for activating the mechanism including delaying the movement of the armature from the first position to the second position until such time as the armature force is greater than the maximum force necessary to activate the mechanism.

    • An intelligent circuit breaker or switching device system comprises three separate microprocessor-based units, including a condition monitoring unit (CMU) 40, a breaker control unit (BCU) 50, and a synchronous control unit (SCU) 60. The CMU 40 provides detailed diagnostic information by monitoring key quantities associated with circuit breaker or switching device reliability. On-line analysis performed by the CMU provides information facilitating the performance of maintenance as needed and the identification of impending failures. The BCU 50 is a programmable system having self-diagnostic and remote communications. The BCU replaces the conventional electromechanical control circuits typically employed to control a circuit breaker or switching device. The SCU 60 provides synchronous switching control for both closing and opening the circuit interrupters. The control processes carried out by the SCU reduce system switching transients and interrupter wear. The intelligent circuit breaker or switching device system improves system operation and equipment maintenance.
