    • A method and apparatus are provided for reducing pollutants and especially nitrogen oxides, or NOx, in the exhaust gases of an engine. The apparatus includes a device for injecting ammonia into a conduit that extends between cylinder exhaust valves and a catalytic converter, to mix the ammonia with the exhaust gases. Ammonia injection occurs at a location a plurality of inches downstream of the exhaust valves to avoid burning of the ammonia by flames. The injection preferably occurs at a location where the exhaust gases are at a temperature of at least about 1200.degree. F. to cause considerable reaction of the ammonia with NOx in the exhaust gases prior to the gases reaching the catalyst, so less NOx must be removed along the catalyst. To minimize ammonia use, it is injected only for a limited period such as a minute after a cold engine is started when the catalyst is too cold to cause significant reactions, and during operation of the engine at high power levels when the greatest amounts of NOx are produced.

    • A basic tree construction, from which differential cascode voltage switch (DCVS) circuits having variable logic personality can be formed, contains n (>2) rows of differentially associated semiconductor device pairs spanned by n pairs of complementary input conductor leads, and a load circuit coupled to drain terminals of devices in the nth row. The nth row contains 2 device pairs and each other row contains 2.sup.i-1 device pairs (i=1, 2, . . . , n-1). Connections between source and drain terminals of devices in successive rows are predefined from the 1st to the n-1st row and variably definable between the n-1st and nth rows. Connections between input conductors and device gate terminals are predefined in each row other than the nth row, and variably definable in the nth row. Upon selectively defining a set of variable connections relative to the n-1st and nth rows the logic personality of the tree is selected to conform to any one of all possible functions of n variables. Logic function personalization is established in one embodiment by altering materials at discrete points in a space between n-1st and nth rows. In another embodiment, personalization is established by altering signals stored by latch devices in the space between the n-1st and nth rows which control gating device adjacently positioned to form conductive connections corresponding to those formed by altering materials in the first embodiment.

    • An in-line contactor adapted to bring about intimate contact between a disinfectant and a wastewater stream to produce a reaction between the disinfectant and pathogens effecting kills in a manner minimizing unwanted side effects. The wastewater stream is pumped through the successive stages of the contactor, the first of which is an input section having a converging nozzle that projects the stream at high velocity into a throat. The throat feeds the stream in a highly turbulent state through a mixing section, the resultant vacuum created within the throat acting to draw a disinfectant such as aqueous or gaseous chlorine from a disinfectant supply into the mixing section where it is thoroughly intermingled with the turbulent stream before the stream is discharged from the contactor through a diverging pressure-recovery output section.

    • An ink jet printer deposits ink drops from a plurality of jet drop streams along a plurality of parallel adjacent print lines on a sheet of paper. The printer includes a sheet supporting drum, means for rotating the drum, and a print head which is slidably mounted adjacent the drum for linear movement in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum. A rotatable cam defines a continuous endless camming surface with the cam being driven by a drive arrangement interconnected with the means for rotating the drum. A cam follower means follows the continuous camming surface and moves the print head in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the paper supporting drum such that jet streams are directed to deposit drops along respective ones of the print lines during successive rotations of the drum.

    • A system for generating electricity in a vehicle when the vehicle is not moving at a sufficient speed to drive the on board generators and when the wind is insufficient to drive the generators. In one embodiment, a control unit receives input signals from sensors which determine the vehicle speed and the speed and direction of the wind. In another embodiment, the control unit receives input signals from sensors which determine the total current produced by the generator. Based on these signals, the control unit controls the discharge of air from storage tanks on the vehicle to power the generators. The generators produce electricity which is stored on the vehicle and is used to run the vehicle.

    • An automatic document handler for a duplex copier is disclosed in which an inverting drum is employed for inverting documents which are to be copied on both sides (duplex copying). The inverting drum is provided with pressure or transport belts which carry a document over a portion of the surface of said drum, and a diverter gate arrangement is provided at the exit side of the belts, adjacent the drum, for selectively providing for passage of the document to a collection station, or alternatively, for causing the documents to re-enter toward the drum for delivery to a duplex scanning station. The diverter gate arrangement includes a relatively fixed stripper which is positioned adjacent the surface of the drum, which stripper cooperates with a movable gate. In one position of the gate, a nose portion of the gate is nested with the stripper and permits documents to pass thereover to a collection station. In a second position, the gate intercepts documents from the stripper and from the pressure belts and causes the same to be redirected toward the drum for duplex copying.
