    • A liquid storage device includes: a liquid storage having a storage chamber for storing liquid; first communication devices each for transmitting a radio wave for carrying out short distance wireless communication; a second communication device for receiving the radio wave transmitted from each first communication device; and a controller. The first communication devices are arranged in a configuration corresponding to a direction of movement of a boundary surface between a liquid stored area and a liquid non-stored area in the storage chamber. The movement is caused by increase or decrease of an amount of the liquid in the storage chamber. The storage chamber is partly interposed between the second communication device and the first communication devices. The controller detects a position of the boundary surface based on a reception status of the radio wave transmitted from each first communication device and received by the second communication device.

    • An apparatus for forming an image is disclosed which includes a scanner motor rotatably driving a polygon mirror; a laser light emitter emitting laser light; a generator detecting the laser light reflected off from the polygon mirror, thereby generating a first periodic signal; a generator detecting rotation of the scanner motor, thereby generating a second periodic signal; and a controller performing speed control of the scanner motor, based on at least one of the first and the second periodic signal. The controller makes a first determination as to whether a pre-selected one of the first and the second periodic signal is abnormal. Upon the pre-selected signal being abnormal, the controller makes a second determination as to whether a remaining one of the first and the second periodic signal is normal, and based on a result of the second determination, the controller identifies at least one failed element of the apparatus.

    • A sound volume-controllable communication apparatus capable of outputting signals as monitoring sounds simultaneously with the transmission and reception of the signals is disclosed. At the time of transmission of a signal from, for example, a facsimile machine, a sound volume control unit performs control such that the volume of a sound output from a sound outputting unit is set to a volume lower than the volume normally set. More specifically, when a number key or an automatic dial key is operated, the facsimile machine stores into a memory the present volume of monitoring sounds from a speaker, and then sets the speaker volume to zero, thereby establishing a state where no sound will be produced from the speaker. If the key operated is a number key, the facsimile machine continually transmits a selection signal until the operation on the number key ends. The facsimile machine then sets the speaker volume back to the value stored in the memory, thereby establishing a state where sounds will be produced from the speaker. If the key operated is an automatic dial key, the facsimile machine reads, one digit at a time, the corresponding number from the memory, and sequentially transmits the corresponding selection signals. After all of the signals corresponding to the digits have been transmitted, the facsimile machine resumes the state where sounds will be produced from the speaker.

    • In a communication apparatus capable of selectively preventing the production of a caller's voice only during the recording of a message without requiring a user to change the message volume setting, a setting unit is provided for allowing setting to be made regarding whether or not the voice signal is to be produced as a voice to be monitored from a speaker simultaneously with the recording of the voice signal. A silencing control unit, including a CPU, performs control such that, if a setting has been made by the setting unit such that the caller's voice is not to be produced, output of the voice by the speaker is prevented or reduced to a substantially inaudible volume during the recording of the caller's voice signal. In the operation of recording an incoming message (ICM) from a caller, if the volume setting data for the ICM is OFF, the CPU stores the present speaker volume setting, and then sets the speaker volume to zero, so that no sound will be produced from the speaker during the subsequent recording of an ICM. After the recording of the ICM, the CPU sets the speaker volume back to the setting stored, so that sounds will be produced from the speaker at the volume level previously set by the user.
