    • A method and apparatus for wireless communication of multimedia broadcast multicast services (MBMS) data and unicast data using separate downlink carriers and are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) having a single receiver that is switchable to receive either carrier is provided. A network station, such as a Node-B, preferably encodes K MBMS data packets to N MBMS encoded packets using erasure correction coding where N is preferably significantly greater than ( K + v ) which is a determined number of MBMS encoded packets sufficient to recover the K MBMS data packets. The Node-B preferably generates a superframe for carrying the N MBMS encoded packets for each MBMS and transmits the superframe via an MBMS carrier. The Node-B preferably schedules a unicast transmission such that the WTRU is provided with sufficient time to switch to the MBMS carrier to receive at least ( K + v ) MBMS encoded packets per superframe.

    • A network has a central entity connected to a plurality of capillary networks and external networks. Information regarding the capillary networks and the external networks may be fused in the central entity to provide assistance services and network control to one or more of the capillary networks. The information may he collected from the capillary networks using a logical interface with a common upper layer coupled to multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs). The central entity configures an internal communications network including a plurality of disparate devices, and recognizes and communicates with each device within the internal communications network by discovering each new device as introduced into the internal communications network. A communication link can be set up with reconfigurable or capable devices to exchange information possibly in another format in another band. The same communication link can be torn down after completion of the service.

    • Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are provided for managing multiple radio access technology (RAT) interfaces to enable opportunistic RAT selection and aggregation for sending data traffic over the multiple RAT interfaces. A system for selecting a RAT may include an Internet Protocol (IP) layer and RAT protocol stacks residing below the IP layer. An opportunistic multiple media access control aggregation (OMMA) layer may reside between the IP layer and the RAT protocol stacks. The OMMA layer may include an OMMA scheduler that may distribute incoming IP data packets among the RAT protocol stacks. An OMMA controller may communicate a control parameter to the OMMA scheduler for selecting a RAT protocol stack for distributing an incoming IP data packet. A wireless transmit/receive unit RAT capability database may store RAT capability information. A policy database may store a policy for distributing the IP data packets among the RAT protocol stacks.
