    • Provided is a method of joining members having different thermal expansion coefficients, capable of joining them at a temperature lower than the melting point of Ag to obtain a joining layer having excellent durability to a thermal cycle. First Ag particles 3 having an average particle diameter of 50 nm or less and an Ag foil 4 or metal foil 4 having a smaller modulus of longitudinal elasticity than that of Ag are placed between two types of members 1 and 2 at least one of which has a lower thermal expansion coefficient than that of Ag, heated to join the members 1 and 2. A wax material 3, which is a powder mixture containing first Ag particles having an average particle diameter of 50 nm or less and second Ag particles or particles of a metal (having a modulus of longitudinal elasticity than that of Ag) having an average particle diameter of 20 μm or more and being contained in a volume fraction of 10 to 40% relative to a total volume of the powder mixture, is placed between the two types of members 1 and 2, heated to join the members 1 and 2. The metal foil 4 and the particles of a metal have an Ag coating layer on a surface thereof. The first member 1 is formed of one type of material selected from the group consisting of Si, SiC, Al2O3, AlN and Si3N4 and the second member is formed of Al or Cu.

    • Disclosed is a particulate filter 10, which comprises a filter body 8 including a plurality of filter segments F1, F2 joined to each other by a joining material 7, wherein each of the filter segments includes a plurality of inflow cells each having a closed end on a downstream side in an exhaust-gas flow direction, and a plurality of outflow cells each having a closed end on an upstream side in the exhaust-gas flow direction. The filter segments include a first filter segment located in a central region of the particulate filter and designed to form each of the inflow cells to have an opening area approximately equal to that of each of the outflow cells, and a second filer segment located in at least a part of an outer peripheral region of the particulate filter and designed to form each of the inflow cells to have an opening area greater than that of each of the outflow cells. The present invention can keep the central region of the particulate filter from becoming overheated during a particulate-filter regeneration process, while suppressing a pressure loss.

    • For determining connection of a TV broadcast receiver for receiving terrestrial broadcasts to a smart antenna with multiple receiving directions having a current active receiving direction, the receiver sends, to the connected antenna, a control signal to change the current active receiving direction to a further active receiving direction, so as to determine that a smart antenna is connected to the receiver if intensity of a television broadcast signal received and measured in the further active receiving direction is significantly varied from that in the current receiving direction. If the intensity of the television broadcast signal in the further active receiving direction is not significantly varied, the receiver determines that a smart antenna is disconnected from the receiver, and displays a message indicating the disconnection to a user. Thus, this receiver can automatically determine the kind of connected antenna, and display information about the connected antenna to the user.
