    • A demand electronic electricity meter having load profile recording capabilities is presented. Load profile recording requires memory for storing the recorded information, whereby either on-board memory or external memory is required. Load profile parameters include the number of channels (e.g., 1, 2 or more channels), interval size (e.g., 1, 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes), quantities to be recorded (e.g., kWh and kvarh, kVAh, or Qh) and channel scalar/divisor (e.g., for each channel, a 2 byte divisor and a 2 byte scalar). With two channels, only two quantities are available for recording, kWh and the one other quantity that the meter has been configured to record, (e.g., kvarh, KVAh, or kQh). For each quantity selected, snapshots of the corresponding total accumulator; (i.e. total kWh and total kvarh, kVAh or kQh) are automatically maintained.

    • An apparatus for disposing a meter register in a default mode of operation includes a microcontroller coupled to a programmable non-volatile memory for automatically disposing the meter register in a self-programmed state when the electrical meter containing the meter register is installed for the first time. The self-programmed state is a functional default state and provides a monitoring utility company with accurate customer billing information from the time of installation. Accordingly, a technician responsible for installing the meter in the field need not be familiar with the techniques for programming the meter. If a mode of operation other than the default mode of operation is preferred, the microcontroller can be accessed for disposing the meter in a time-of-use and demand mode of operation or a demand only mode of operation. The microcontroller also provides means for retaining a programmed state of the meter register in the event of a power outage. Thus, when power is again supplied to the meter after an outage, the meter register is again disposed in the last programmed state prior to power failure.

    • An electricity meter which, in one embodiment, includes a digital signal processor configurable for generating energy measurements for a plurality of meter form types and connections is described. In the one embodiment, the meter includes voltage and current sensor for generating signals representative of current and voltage at a load, and the digital signal processor (DSP) is coupled to the voltage and current sensors. The DSP includes a memory, and a plurality of selectable instruction sets corresponding to respective meter form types are stored in the DSP memory. The form types includes meter ANSI form 9 and meter ANSI form 16 type forms, and the instruction sets include processing steps to be executed to determine line voltages and line currents for respective meter form types. The meter also includes a microcomputer coupled to the DSP for receiving data generated by the DSP. The microcomputer is operable transmit a selection command to the DSP to control selection of one of the instruction sets stored in the DSP memory. An optical port may be electrically coupled to the microcomputer, and the microcomputer is configured to receive a control command from the optical port. The microcomputer uses the control command to generate the selection command.

    • An electronic energy meter is described. The meter includes, in one form, voltage and current sensors having their outputs coupled to an analog to digital converter. The digital signals output by the converter are supplied to a digital signal processor (DSP) which outputs digitized metering quantities to a microcomputer. Using the metering quantities supplied by the DSP, the microcomputer performs additional metering calculations and functions. In one aspect, the present invention is directed to a method for determining whether an option board is being used and, if so, controlling meter operations in accordance with the coupled option board. In another aspect, the present invention is directed to a high function option board which, when enabled, operates as a master and the meter microcomputer automatically switches from its normal master mode to slave mode. In yet another aspect, the present invention is directed to converting the functionality of the electronic electricity meter from a first mode of operation to a second mode of operation. In still another aspect, the present invention is directed to a structure for avoiding, or minimizing, the loss of billing data when converting, or upgrading (or downgrading), meter operations.

    • A programmable multi-channel load profile recorder includes a plurality of memory-based tables, such as a load profile configuration table, a plurality of channel and display configuration tables and an operations table, which can be updated when the recorder is reprogrammed in the field to record additional channels of metering quantities or reconfigured with new formulas. The load profile configuration table containing entries therein for each of a plurality of user-selected metering quantities to be recorded. The plurality of channel and display configuration tables contain parameter data and the operations table contains pointers therein to respective memory-based operation modules, each of which contains executable instructions therein. The metering quantities can be quantities such as watt-hours (Wh), var-hours (Vh), volt-ampere-hours (VAh), volt.sup.2 -hours (V.sup.2 h), ampere.sup.2 -hours (A.sup.2 h) and power factor (PF) as well as other user-selected quantities. According to a preferred aspect of the present invention, each of the tables and modules can be readily updated based on externally supplied data at the time the recorder is programmed. Thus, the recorder need not contain built-in data for determining all the possible channel combinations which might be selected by a user, or fixed formulas for determining all possible metering quantities. The display configuration tables are also provided in memory so that displayable quantities such as RMS line voltage (V.sub.rms) can be displayed by the recorder, even if such quantity is not one of the above-described metering quantities.
