摘要： A ribbon for a thermal printer has a series of frames of different colors in a sequence that are correlated to the position of cards to be printed. The ribbon has indexing marks for each frame and also indicators for each repeating sequence of frames. The index marks are arranged in a line across the ribbon and the marks can be coded to individually indicate the color or other characteristic of the frame associated with the line of index mark. This information is received by a controller to control various printer functions.

摘要： A sensor for sensing and identifying characteristics of a printer ink ribbon when a ribbon supply roll is inserted into a printer and operated. Ink ribbon cartridges used in printers are provided in a number of types, colors, and other identifiable characteristics that are important for insuring that the correct ribbon is inserted in the printer for the then current print job. In the present invention, the ribbon cartridges include ribbon supply rolls which are provided with identifying indicia on one end of the roll, and a sensor to read the presence of indicia when the printer is operated. The positions of the indicia relative to selected reference positions indicates the ink ribbon type. Suitable circuitry is used to disable the printer if the print ribbon is not properly correlated to the requirements of the printer. A Hall Effect Sensor is used adjacent the print roll, and the indicia on the ink ribbon roll comprise pins or similar members that will affect the Hall Effect Sensor output when rotated past the sensor.

摘要： A method of controlling a thermal print head having a plurality of resistive heaters to compensate for the effects of latent heat from the resistive heaters is disclosed. The plurality of resistive heaters are arranged in a line on a substrate with each of the plurality of resistive heaters corresponding to a pixel position on a medium such as paper. A compensation value is determined for each pixel in a line such that the effects of latent heat from the corresponding heater and from adjacent heaters are compensated. A compensated gray level for each pixel of the line is calculated as a function of a desired gray level for the particular pixel in the line and as a function of the associated compensation value. Finally, the heaters are driven as a function of the compensated gray levels to print the corresponding pixels of the line.

摘要： Identification card manufacturing security restricts use of an identification card manufacturing system with only authorized supplies. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a supply-specific security code (SSSC) and supply-specific data are stored in memory of the supply. The SSSC is translated using the supply-specific data. Finally, the supply is authorized for use with the identification card manufacturing system only when the translated SSSC is found to be valid. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, an identification card manufacturing system is configured to operate only with supplies having corresponding customer-specific security codes (CSSC). A supply CSSC and supply-specific data are retrieved from memory of the supply. Additionally, a system CSSC and system-specific data are retrieved from memory of the identification card manufacturing system. The supply CSSC and the system CSSC are translated using the supply-specific data and the system-specific data, respectively. Finally, the supply is authorized for use with the identification card manufacturing system when the translated system CSSC and the translated supply CSSC correspond.
