    • The invention relates to a multistage fiber amplifier having a first amplifying fiber, at least one further amplifying fiber connected in series with the first amplifying fiber, a pump source, a first pump signal fed to the first amplifying fiber, and a further pump signal fed to the further amplifying fiber. The multistage fiber amplifier is distinguished by the fact that a further pump signal is fed to a further amplifying fiber via a power-dependent attenuation element. The attenuation element is formed in such a way that, as the pump power increases, small further pump signals are attenuated to a greater extent than large further pump signals. The power-dependent attenuation of the further pump signal that is fed to the further amplifying fiber and therefore the increased pump signal that is fed to the first amplifying fiber result in improvements in the noise figure of the multistage amplifier.

    • The invention relates to a novel method for controlling a pump unit of a fiber amplifier, with which a transmitted wavelength multiplex (WDM) signal is amplified by at least a distribution of output powers of a plurality of pump sources in order to achieve a favorable noise figure of the amplified WDM signal at a variable required overall pump power. The output powers are distributed using modulation characteristics for the pump sources depending on the overall pump power required for amplification. The modulation characteristics influence the respective inversions in the fiber amplifier in such a manner that a minimum noise figure is achieved for all channels of the WDM signal at a constant gain.

    • The invention relates to a bidirectional optical amplifier array (VA) which is preferably used in a passive optical network (PON) system, is disposed between a first line termination (OLT) and a second line termination (ONU), and is penetrated by an optical downstream signal (OSD) in one direction and an optical upstream signal (OSD) in the opposite direction. Said optical amplifier array is composed of a first part with two branching and combining units (D1 and D2), a unidirectional optical amplifier (E1), and a transponder (T) in which the optical downstream signals and upstream signals (OSU and OSD) are separately amplified. The two signals (OSU and OSD) that run in opposite directions are amplified in a bidirectional amplifier (E2) in a second part. A constant gain is maintained in the bidirectional optical amplifier (E2) by means of the continuous downstream signal (OSD) such that the amplifier can be operated in stable conditions for the upstream signal (OSU) regardless of occurring bursts. In another embodiment, a splitter (S1) is integrated into the inventive amplifier array (VA).
