    • A scanner system for use with a paper handing system includes a scanner having a media feed path and which detects the physical characteristic data of documents transported along said feed path for scanning by said scanner. A paper handling subsystem is provided having a least one actuator coupled to control a mechanism adjustable to settings to adjust the subsystem to be set to process media having different physical characteristics. A controller is coupled between the scanner and the subsystem actuator. The controller processes data detected by the scanner to control the actuator to adjust the subsystem setting to process documents having the physical characteristic detected by the scanner. A user interface communicates to a user the determined setting for the subsystem to process documents having the physical characteristic detected by said scanner. The user interface and setting of the subsystem by the user may be employed with paper handling systems that include actuators where the user may elect to implement or vary the determined subsystem setting. This arrangement with user setting of the subsystem may also be employed with the paper handling systems that do not utilize actuators for some or all of the adjustable settings. The scanner may include an array of sensing elements for scanning objects that move across the sensor elements. Media of variable thickness are transported along a feed path across the sensor elements. A member is mounted along the feed path and is moveable by media transported along the feed path a distance related to the thickness of a transported media. A linkage is coupled to the moveable member and is mounted to engage and move across the sensing elements a distance that is related to the distance of movement of said moveable member such that said sensor elements detect linkage movement.

    • A method and system for selecting fold lines on a sheet to be inserted into a windowed envelope includes scanning the windowed envelope with a scanner to determine the location of the window on the envelope. The location of a data block on an insert to be inserted into the windowed envelope is also determined. The position of one or more of the fold lines on the sheet to be inserted is determined such that a data block printed in the determined location on the sheet will appear behind the envelope window when the sheet is folded in accordance with the determined fold line pattern and inserted into the windowed envelope. The efficiency and flexibility of the system can be enhanced by providing an operator with possible standard and nonstandard fold patterns that will enable proper insertion of the folded sheet into the envelope. In such case, when the sheet is folded with the selected fold pattern and inserted into the envelope, the required data block information will appear behind the appropriate envelope window. The paper handling equipment adjustments for the selected fold type and proper loading of the insert materials into the insert feeders can be communicated to the operator or used to automatically adjust the folding mechanism for the selected fold pattern. Additionally template information can be generated by the system to provide the operator with information on the proper location for the address block information on the sheet in order to position the address information behind the window in the envelope for a selected standard fold type.

    • An Escort-Based Sorting (EBS) mail sorting and distribution center system configured and controlled for optimum mail flow and dispatch, minimal sorting center space usage, and elimination of peripheral storage and retrieval equipment. A plurality of input stations each include a mechanism for loading mailpieces and obtaining mailpiece data. A plurality of sorting banks each having a plurality of sorting modules, each sorting module adapted for the face-to-face conveyance of mailpieces for sorting by transferring select mailpieces from a first to a second conveyance path. The sorting modules define at least one row and a plurality tiers operatively coupled by a plurality of elevators. The elevators move mailpieces to and from tiers of the respective sorting bank. A system controller, operatively coupled to the input stations, sorting banks, and elevators, creates an association between the mailpiece information and the escort device, and sorts and dispatches mailpieces according to a dispatch schedule.

    • An envelope for use in containing and authenticating a ballot is presented. The envelope has a containment region dimensioned to receive a ballot or other desired document in accordance with the particular application with which the envelope is used and has a pre-defined area on the back to carry the signature of a person such as a voter using the envelope to vote by mail. A flap portion outside the pre-defined area is used to seal the containment region. A window cover is substantially in registration with the pre-defined signature area to obscure the signature in a first operative configuration and to reveal the pre-defined signature area in a second operative and to re-obscure the signature area after the signature area has been revealed whereby the ballot remains sealed during the pre-defined signature area obscured, revealed and re-obscured configurations. The window cover is arranged for automatic removal by mechanical opening means for automated processing.

    • A method for producing a continuous web of printed material for use in creating mailpieces. The continuous web has a width and a length, the length comprised of a series of attached sheets. The series of attached sheets are comprising envelope sheets and rectangular content pages. The content pages are rectangular in shape and may be oriented relative to the envelope sheets in a number of different configurations. In some configurations, two sets of content pages and/or envelope sheets can be printed across the width of the web. Sheets for forming business return envelopes may be printed in series with the content pages and envelope sheets. BREs may include individualized return addresses. A control code may be printed on one or more of the sheets for a given mailpiece, providing information for controlling assembly of the mailpiece. Two sets of sheets may be printed across the width of the web by printing content pages onto the continuous web such that two end-to-end content pages are printed across the width of the web. Positioning of mail content pages and envelope sheets for a given mailpiece may be optimized based on respective processing times determined for the system.

    • A method and system for encapsulating mail containers delivered to a building so as to prevent possible contaminants in the mail containers from contaminating the building. An opening is provided on a building wall that substantially separates indoor air circulation from the outdoor air for receiving the mail containers. A plastic tube having a closed end and an open end is used to encapsulate the mail containers. The open end is securely attached to the opening in the wall for receiving the mail containers into the tube, while preventing air circulation outside the building from entering the opening. A sealing device is used to seal the plastic tube for keeping the mail containers in separate sealed sections. A severing device is used to separate the sealed sections in the encapsulated packages so that the encapsulated packages can be tested for the possible contaminants.
