    • A system, method and computer-usable medium are disclosed for recovering data from a memory storage device. The operating system (OS) of an IPS comprising a source memory storage device, further comprising stored data, is monitored to detect a defective operating state. If a defective operating state of the OS is detected, then operation of the IPS is terminated, followed by the initiation of IPS boot operations to recover data from the source memory storage device. The OS is bypassed, and initial boot operations are performed from a management controller or from the BIOS of the IPS. Additional boot operations are performed, and once the IPS has been brought to an operative state, a data recovery module is used to transfer data from the source memory storage device to a target storage device.

    • A system and method for converting information stored on a magnetic medium to DVD format. A tape transport mechanism may sample information stored on a magnetic medium at a selected rate where the selected rate is correlated to an available buffer size in a data processing system. The rate at which information is sampled may be less than the NTSC standard of 30 frames/second thereby requiring less storage to store the digital video representation. The sampled information may be captured and converted into a digital format. The digitized magnetic waveform may be transferred to the data processing system configured to convert the digitized magnetic signals into digitized television waveforms to recover the analog and video content. The digitized television waveforms may then be converted into a digital video representation. The digitized information may then be temporarily stored in the available buffer prior to being compressed and converted into DVD format.

    • An improved modem is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the improved modem detects a loss of host synchronism, indicated by an under flow event such as a lack of, or impending lack of data from the host. Normally, the under flow event would result in a lack of data to be sent to a receiving modem, causing a communication link between the two modems to be broken. The improved modem notifies the host of the under flow event and supplies alternate data to the data encoding unit of the modem in order to keep the communication link established. The alternate data supplied is typically an instruction or other action that requires no data from the host and keeps the communication link active. When the host regains synchronism, the host sends data to the modem and normal processing continues.

    • A method for configuring a mobile device including a plurality of communication interfaces is provided. A first network configuration identifying communication networks accessible through the communication interfaces of the mobile device is identified. The first network configuration is compared to a plurality of previously encountered network configurations. A location of the mobile device associated with the first network configuration is designated responsive to the first network configuration being included in the plurality of previously encountered network configurations. Usage patterns of the communication interfaces at the designated location are tracked. Connectivity is established for the mobile device to a remote network through the communication interfaces based on the usage patterns.
