    • 236,758. Thompson, H. H., Davies, A. E., and Box, W. E. Aug. 25, 1924. Magnetic separators.-In a separator pulley, magnet windings d, Fig. 1, in the form of separate units are carried on cores e arranged longitudinally between steel or other rings c which are mounted on and carried by the stepped peripheries of rings b, of brass or other non-magnetic material, secured to a shaft a. The spaces between the outer edges of the rings c is filled with strips of brass or other non-magnetic material, secured to shoulders g on the rings c to provide a smooth surface for the pulley belt. To ventilate the pulley, air enters the latter through apertures j in the strips f and leaves by apertures (not shown) in the rings b. The circulation of the air may be assisted by a fan rotatably mounted on the shaft a. In a modification, Fig. 5, spiders m of non-magnetic material are mounted on a stationary shaft a. Segmental pole-pieces w which extend for slightly more than 180‹ and carry the cores &c. o mounted on the spiders m. The cores c &c. are mounted inside a rotary dum k having a non-magnetic periphery q. The poles n may extend beyond the cores o or an adjustable armature may be arranged close to the drum to concentrate the lines of force. In another modification the pole pieces are provided with inwardly, directed or cranked flanges, the space between the poles being closed by a non-magnetic strip. The surfaces of the flanges may be serrated, grooved or, ribbed. When this form is used with a drum, as in Fig. 5, the non- magnetic periphery is provided with a groove fitting between the flanges of the pole-pieces and into which the material to be treated is fed. Continuous or broken rings or bars, or studs or feelers of magnetic metal may be secured on the outer surface of the drum. Specification 5522/07 is referred to.
