    • In an apparatus equipped with an engine controller which controls the engine based on an output from a temperature sensor that detects the coolant temperature of the engine, the improvement which comprises a temperature sensor output monitor means which monitors the output of said temperature sensor when the engine is in operation, a temperature sensor fail determining means which determines said temperature sensor to be in failure when said temperature sensor output monitor means has not detected a change in the output that corresponds to the temperature rise of the temperature sensor output for a predetermined period of time while the temperature sensor is producing a signal that corresponds to the coolang temperature with the engine in operation, and a pseudo signal output means which produces a pseudo signal corresponding to a predetermined temperature to said engine controller instead of sending an output signal from the temperature sensor when the temperature sensor is determined to be in failure by the temperature sensor fail determining means, wherein abnormal condition in the temperature sensor due to increase in the resistance is detected to fix the output of the temperature sensor other than the short-circuit or breakage in the circuit, in addition to controlling the engine under the ordinary condition of temperature sensor, the engine is controlled reliably, the number of revolutions of the engine is fixed to a desired number of revolutions when the idling speed is being controlled, the enrichment is suppressed in controlling the fuel, and the angle advancement in the ignition timing is suppressed in controlling the ignition.
