    • Apparatus is disclosed for separating hosiery produced on a circular knitting machine. The hosiery is knitted as a continuous tubular fabric with a weakened portion being formed between articles to be separated. The separating apparatus includes a frame mounted below the knitting machine, a gripping and separating arm pivotally mounted on the frame, and a fixed clamping arm mounted on the frame below the gripping and separating arm. The gripping arm and the clamping arm each include a pair of jaws which are intermittently actuated to engage the tubular fabric adjacent the weakened portion of the articles. The gripping arm is pivoted to exert an arcuate pulling force upwardly away from the clamping arm to cause the articles to be separated along their weakened portions. The separation action is arranged so as to prevent stretching of the fabric coming from the knitting machine. A fabric guide and a pneumatic transport for the separator are also disclosed.

To assist in loading the string the form 11 may be connected to a compressed air source and a motor driven roller 20 engage the form in a loading position (broken lines). The grasping means comprise fingers 17a, b which are opened and closed at appropriate times by an overcentre linkage 48. The arm 36 is moved by a pneumatic cylinder 16 which is controlled from a switch 36. The number of cycles of the arm is automatically counted. The connection of the form 11 to compressed air and vacuum is controlled from a switch responsive to the position of the form. The rings r 1 , r 2 etc. interconntcting the hose may be knitted of alginate yarn.

    • 875,657. Fabrics, testing and inspecting. MARVEL SPECIALTY CO. Sept. 28, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 32824/59. Class 42 (2). A hosiery inspection and stacking machine includes a tube having a transfer passage extending from a hosiery inlet at one end to a hosiery outlet at the other end, a hosiery receiving form at the one end, means for causing air to flow from the outlet to the inlet to facilitate application of hosiery to the form, a stacking device movable along a path between the outlet and a stacking location and pneumatically operated means operated simultaneously with the air flow means to move the stacking device from the outlet to the stacking location whilst air is flowing in the said direction. In the arrangement shown a sock S to be inspected is placed by the machine operator on the inspection form 22. During this operation air is released from tank 40 along conduit 28 to the open end of the form 22 to facilitate the placing of the sock on the form. After the inspection, and assuming the sock to be satisfactory the operator depresses foot pedal FP which controls valves so as to stop the flow of air through the form 22 but to discharge air through the outlet opening at 30. This has the effect of creating a suction in the tube 28 such that the sock S is sucked down the tube and discharged into the retaining fingers 31. From the fingers 31 the sock is gripped by fingers 148, 150 and drawn out over the table T to be stacked thereon. The fingers 148, 150 are controlled by bellows 68 acting on the rod 94 connected to the assembly of parts constituting the stacking assembly generally indicated at 70. The bellows 68 is controlled in synchronism with the suction of the sock S from the form 22 and the tank 40 is charged from compressor 36 driven by motor 32.
