    • 351,978. Kinematograph projectors. PACENT, L. G., Winfield, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. Feb. 15, 1930, No.5162. Convention date, May 6, 1929. [Class 97 (i).] In a combined sound-reproducing and kinematograph apparatus, in which a gramophone and a projector are arranged side by side and are driven through gearing from a common motor, the projector 15 is pivotally mounted at 29 on a pedestal 16, and the gramophone, comprising a turntable 17 and an electric pick-up 19, is supported by a pedestal 18. A shelf or bracket 23 is held by nuts on bolts 24 extending down from the projector head, as shown in Fig. 2, through openings 25 in spaced arms 26 of the bracket, Fig. 3. The bracket, which carries the motor 21 and the gear box 22 has an arcuate slot concentric with the pivot 29, to receive a clamping bolt 30, so that the projector can be fixed after being tilted as required. The motor is so located that it largely counterbalances the weight of the projector and the gear-box. The latter contains a drive shaft, in line with the motor shaft, and coupled to it by a flexible vibration-absorbing coupling 42. A part 43 of this coupling is formed as a wheel for hand-adjustment and balancing. The drive shaft in the gear-box carries two spiral gears, meshing respectively with a large spiral gear on a shaft 37 and a smaller wheel on a shaft 39, these two shafts being mounted on ball bearings and projecting through felt &c. packings in opposite side walls of the box. The shaft 37 drives the projector through a pinion 45, and is provided with a vibration-absorbing universal coupling 44. The space 46 between the arms of the bracket provides passage for the lower film magazine belt or chain. The drive is transmitted to the gramophone through the shaft 39.

Clutches.-In an hydraulic power - transmission c o u p l i n g, capable of use as a brake device, the pistons are provided on one side of the arms carrying them, and are all on the same side relative to the direction of rotation, so that they engage with their working chambers in such a way that the working surfaces are pressed together automatically. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form of the apparatus. The arms g are secured to a sleeve e mounted on the eccentric boss c on the shaft b. Arms h are similarly mounted on the boss d, so that, when the shaft b is rotated, the piston-like extensions l secured to the rods are moved up and down in the recesses in the gripper disk k. These chambers or recesses are connected by ducts m, n the former of which are arranged near the centre of the shaft a and merge into ducts v which may be moved out of registration, so that the flow of fluid from one chamber to the other, which takes place normally due to the opposite displacements of the adjacent pistons, is stopped. Fig. 3 is a section on the line C-D of Fig. 2, and shows the wedge-shaped surfaces of the pistons l bearing against the corresponding faces of the chambers i , and so producing a tight joint. In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the bosses c, d, arranged eccentrically on the shaft b and to each other are of conical form and one is removable. Bushes g , h are slipped over the bosses and are provided with wedge - shaped recesses z wherein engage disks g , h , provided with wedge - shaped attachments y, and also with piston-like attachments l. The gripper arms k are fixed to the shaft a; and the arms engage by means of arms k between the disks g , h . The arms k are provided with slots s for receiving the pistons l; the slots are connected by means of ducts t which may be closed by the cocks u.
