[Also in Group XIII] An ice skating-rink comprises a structure built up of prefabricated sections including heat insulative, e.g. cork, layers 3c, 4b, and eutectic freezing plates 4d supported horizontally on or above the cork layers, an upstanding rim 5 surrounding the structure. Longitudinal bearer members 1 support bottom sections which extend the full width of the rink, each section consisting of the cork slabs 3c resting on a board floor 3b carried in an L- section light alloy frame 3a, a canvas sheeting 3d covering the cork. On the bottom sections are supported top sections which include, besides the freezing plates 4d, a cork layer 4b carried in a wooden frame 4c, with convas 4a beneath the cork. Pipes 4e in the plates 4d enable a refrigerant, e.g. brine, to be circulated from a compression refrigerating apparatus. A layer of water-absorbent material, e.g. sand 6, overlies the top of the plates 4d and is flooded and frozen to form a base for the ice floor proper. The upper sections overlap the joints between the lower sections. The upper and lower sections may be prefabricated as a unit, and part or all of the rink may be mounted on wheels.

Controlling variable-speed gearing; clutches.-Variable-speed gearing for motor-cycles &c. is controlled by a sliding spiral rack which is divided into two parts a, a' Fig. 3, which are relatively turnable to adjust friction clutches for wear. The clutches have expanding segments c, Fig. 2, operated through screws e frcm pinions b meshing with the rack. In making an adjustment, one of the rack parts is turned a complete revolution relatively to the other, the pinions b, b of two clutches being relatively displaced. Incomplete adjustment and accidental rotation are prevented by spring plungers d engaging flats g, Fig. 1, on the rack parts, which are held in position by a through bolt or rod f.

Change-speed gearing.-The chains of a two-speed gear having the driving-sprockets g, f, fixed to the engine crankshaft are independently tensioned by jockey sprockets j. The driven chain-wheels a, b, can be connected to the countershaft e through clutches c, d. The sprockets j are formed as rings running on rollers on eccentrics j fixed on pins j which can be rotated and set by spring arms m. The gearing is arranged in an extension of the crank case, the driving- sprockets being outside the crank case proper in the case of a two-stroke-cycle engine.

Relates to means for supplying a definite quantity of liquid disinfectant to flushing-cisterns after each flush. A receptacle A for the disinfectant is secured by a strap P or the like to the flushing-cistern. A measuring-vessel B closed by a cap D, add provided with an air tube O, is secured to the receptacle A. The vessed 1 B is formed with two openings C, F which are, alternately, opened and closed by valves on a spindle S, fitted with a spring to keep the valve V normally closed. The lower valve is formed by cutting away part of the spindle S which passes through the opening F. A pivoted lever J, connected by a chain N to the flushing-lever, bears upon the top of the valve spindle S to operate the valves at the time of each discharge. The Provisional Specification states that the receptacle A also serves to disinfect the room in which the flushing-cistern is placed.

The edges B' of the blades and A of the crown are shaped to abut closely, but, if desired, the outer sides of the blades may have a notch extending up towards the top of the crown, the ends of which are correspondingly recessed. The parts are pinned and brazed, or otherwise secured.
