    • A wireless communication system having a base unit and a plurality of remote transceiver units utilizes a dynamic time slot assignment scheme for channel access. The base unit receives and processes a channel access request message from a remote transceiver unit and prepares a channel measurement request message in response. If an Mth time slot of a time frame is available, the base unit sends this message in the Mth time slot and receives a message having channel measurement data in the Mth time slot of the next time frame. On the other hand, if the Mth time slot of the time frame is already reserved, the base unit sends the message in an Nth time slot of the time frame and receives a message having the channel measurement data in the Nth time slot of the next time frame.     • A system and method are described for dynamic temperature calibration of a frequency reference in a wireless base station. In a consumer grade base station, a reference oscillator may encounter frequency drift as the temperature of the base station changes. This causes interference as the transmission signal is not synchronized with other frequency resources in a network. An improved method of calibrating a reference frequency includes measuring a frequency difference between a frequency derived from an accurate reference frequency in a first base station and a frequency derived from a less accurate frequency reference in a second base station, determining a calibration factor for the offset, and applying the calibration factor to the base station to correct frequency drift. The calibration factors may be correlated with an operating temperature of the base station and stored in a temperature calibration table in the base station device.

Populating the burst frame includes identifying a largest unscheduled block pair, and appending one of the uplink block and the downlink block of the identified block pair to a shortest sub-frame string. The method also includes determining if a conflict exists between the uplink block and the downlink block for each scheduled block pair.

    • A method is provided for multiple remote units (RU)s to efficiently utilize resources on a shared OFDM high speed data channel without collisions. A collision occurs when two or more RUs transmit on the same frequency at the same time. The method defines two distinct states for accessing the channel. These are the Arbitration state and the Data Transfer state. A base station transmits a flag on the downlink to notify the RUs of which state is in effect. RUs having a data message notify the base station by transmitting a frequency tone, which acts as a request to transmit data, during the arbitration state. The tone frequencies are frequency spaced to be mutually orthogonal, so that the base station can receive all the uplink requests simultaneously. Upon receiving the uplink request signals, the base station establishes the data transfer state and orders the uplink data messages from the remote units is a non-interfering sequence. A system for preventing uplink data message collisions in an OFDM communications system is also provided.
