    • Pilot messages are transmitted between communicating nodes on a network either periodically or as a continuous background process in order to determine the most efficient path for transmitting a message from a node to every other node in a network depending on prevailing message traffic conditions. Each node can transmit pilot messages at predetermined intervals or in response to commands from a master riding node. A master riding node can monitor message traffic and alter the sequence in which pilot messages are transmitted, thereby more frequently monitoring traffic between nodes with heavy communication requirements. By routing messages from a source node to a destination over a predetermined efficient path, it is no longer necessary for the system to determine a next destination point as messages traverse the network.

    • An information communication system has a plurality of nodes connected by both an information transmission bus and a signalling channel. The information transmission bus is used to carry messages between devices attached to the nodes of the network. The signing channel is used to signal nodes that a message transmission is about to occur. Based on the devices connected to the nodes, the appropriate communication protocol can be set up and resources allocated on the information transmission bus to efficiently transfer information. The invention allows a device acting as a message source to communicate with another device at a first node using a first protocol and to communicate with a different device at a second node using a second protocol. The protocols can be stored in the devices attached to the nodes or a control node can be used.

    • A data bus for connecting information processing devices is configurable into a plurality of subbusses in order to fully utilize the data bus capacity. The size and data transfer direction of each subbus, as well as the data transfer speed of each subbus, is independent of the other subbusses. Also, the data bus can be reconfigured to meet changing system requirements. A data bus controller is thus provided to accomplish this data bus reconfiguration. A method of configuring a data bus is also provided wherein information transfer needs of a system are identified and the data bus is configured according to the identified information transfer means.     • A method of allocating bandwidth among a plurality of devices communicatively connected through a data bus provides for determining a data need of at least one of the plurality of devices, allocating portions of the data bus to the devices in response to the data need, and transmitting data between the devices on the allocated portions of the data bus. The portions of the data bus can be subbusses, each comprising at least one bit line. The data need can be based on a measure of fullness of a buffer corresponding to the at least one device. The data need can be provided as feedback from the buffer to a data bus controller which allocates the portions of the data bus. The method can use rules for assigning the subbusses which are stored in a memory. A processor can change the rules to accommodate changing conditions in the data bus. Also provided is a data communication system comprising a dynamically reconfigurable data bus, a data bus controller connected to the dynamically reconfigurable data bus for configuring subbusses of the data bus, a plurality of receiving devices connected to the data bus, and a feedback connection from at least one of the receiving devices to the data bus controller, wherein the data bus controller configures the subbusses in accordance with feedback received over the feedback connection. A memory can be connected to the data bus controller for storing rules for use by the data bus controller in configuring the subbusses. A processor can change the rules to accommodate changing conditions in the data bus.

    • An adjacency matrix is incorporated into a local area network in order to provide smoother and faster transitions between mobile devices and access points of adjacent or overlapping microcells. The adjacency matrix can be based on fuzzy logic and updated periodically. Factors used to create the matrix can include the ability to establish a communication link, signal strength measurements, roam times, time of day, day of week and other factors germaine to the local area network topology and patterns of its usage. The mobile device thus effects the transition by attempting to communicate on the frequencies associated with hopping schemes of the access points which are most likely adjacent to the previous access point. As a result, the average transition time is greatly reduced.
