A trigger recognized at the transmission node initiates a broadcast transmission, and the resultant set up of a transmission path. A termination trigger then indicates that the transmission node is not serving users desiring the broadcast transmission, and in response the transmission path is shut down. In one embodiment, a multi-cast call, such as a group call, may be transmitted to active users via uni-cast channel(s) or multi-cast channel(s) based on a predetermined criteria, such as number of active users.

Content, such as audio, video or textual content, can be hosted by a server for delivery to the device. The content can have associated resources, for example icons, barkers, intros, and outros that are associated with television programming or other media content. A metadata document can describe the set of resources or other auxiliary data associated with a service, channel or content by indicating a resource descriptor, and a URL or other associated resource locator information. The metadata document can be encoded in XML or other formats. The device can locate resources that are intended to be delivered with selected content, since links to the resources are integrated in the metadata document. From the resource descriptor, the device can also identify how a particular resource should be utilized for the service, channel or content.

A mobile device can provide a program guide displaying a listing of content scheduled for broadcast by a content server. An upper network can be in hierarchical coverage with at least two networks, and can receive at least one of guide and frequency data associated with the program guide from the at least two networks. The upper network can aggregate the at least one of guide and frequency data into aggregated guide and frequency data. The aggregated data can be distributed to the at least two networks and/or accessed from the upper network. The mobile device can receive the aggregated data from either the at least two networks or the upper network.
