    • An electrohydraulic servo system forming a control loop for controlling pressure of fluid in a cavity of undetermined volume includes a valve (14) which fluid as a function of position of the valve element (16) is supplied from. An electronic valve controller (40) receives a pressure command signal (Pc) from remote master electrinics (42), and a pressure feedback signal (P) from a pressure sensor (46) in the loop. Such signals (P, Pc) are compared in a pressure-control mode of operation, and a difference or error signal is employed for generating valve control singals (Ye). A second sensor (44) supplies a position feedback signal (Y). The pressure feedback signal (P) is varied with respective gain (Kp), the position feedback signal (Y) is varied with further gain (Kd), and the difference or error signal is varied with another gain (Ke). Cavity volume is determined as a function of the pressure and position feedback signals (P, Y). Control loop gains, specifically Ke and Kd, are varied as a function of cavity volume for thereby adapting the system for either intended or unintended variations in cavity volume.

    • A system and method for loading cargo as cargo units in an aircraft cargo handling system having a cargo loading bay (14) that opens laterally of the aircraft (12) and at least one cargo stowing bay (16,18,20) adjacent to the cargo loading bay (14) longitudinally of the aircraft (12). Two self-erecting power drive units (26,28) are disposed in the cargo loading bay (14) such that the associated rollers are oriented to propel cargo units (24) in orthogonal directions. The two power drive units (26,28) in the loading bay (14) are also disposed adjacent to each other such that, when both are in the erected position, the rollers of each unit simultaneously engage a single overlying cargo unit (24). The power drive units (26,28) may be simultaneously placed in the erected position with the motors de-energized, such that orthogonal orientation of the de-energized drive rollers effectively prevents movement of an overlying cargo unit (24) engaged by both rollers, whereby the cargo unit (24) so engaged is prevented from inadvertent movement out of the loading bay (14). The power drive units (26,28) are equipped with a sensor for detecting when a cargo unit (24) overlies the power drive unit, and a controller is responsive to such sensors for removing power from the power drive units when not in use.
